December 30, 2007 mysteries that may never be solved
While in the City yesterday, I encountered something that I still don't understand. Anna, Eugenia and I were walking up 5th Ave to look at the store windows, decorated for the holidays. When we got to one corner, there was a line of people wrapped around the building and a rope to separate the line from the rest of the us on the sidewalk. The store? Abercrombie & Fitch. Next door, there was no line at Prada. I simply do not understand this world we live in.

December 23, 2007 simply lovely
I didn't get anything new to wear to church tomorrow, but that's been about the only downer of this weekend so far.
I got to go to church this morning (even though I was a bit late) and saw a bunch of people I don't get to see very often. Including JENNI!!! I haven't seen her in ages and it was so great to hug her and do the 2-minute recap of our lives. I got to meet her boyfriend, who seems perfectly nice and didn't even roll his eyes at our "JENNI/Y!" scream.
I didn't get to have dinner with Rachel, but it was nice to relax at home after going to the mall and dealing with the crowds. I watched the first half of the Redskins game with my folks and then we headed downtown to look at the National Christmas Tree. I got to use my new camera (Christmas present!) to get some great photos. I'll post 'em when I get back home.
I'm really happy to be home and enjoying my time here. I get to have lunch with Erin and Payton tomorrow and then it's off to church for a million hours.
Merry Christmas!

December 20, 2007 Best News!
No, T13 this week - just a note to say my boss is awesome. I only technically get Christmas Day off, but she came in today and said that I could take Christmas Eve off as well, so I could drive down to DC to be with my family for church. So, I actually get a Christmas break! Of course, that means that I have to do everything I had planned to do this weekend tomorrow, but it's a small price to be paid to be able to spend time with my friends and family for the holiday :)

December 18, 2007 And we need a little Christmas, right this very minute
(i.e. Jenn will do pretty much anything to delay working out)
I decided while I sat in traffic this evening that I wasn't going to live in squalor any longer. I'm tired of coming home to my apartment looking like a wreck, just because I'm too lazy at the end of the day to do anything about it.
So I cleaned up the living room and vacuumed the whole apartment. I plan on wrapping the Christmas presents while watching "The Biggest Loser" finale, but for now, they are residing on my bed. There's still a lot of clutter around, but it's a lot better than it was.
I also put out the first Christmas decorations I'm planning to use this year. I decided not to put up the tree because 1) I didn't feel like going out to storage area to get the big box which is at the bottom of the pile and 2) I don't really have room for it. It could really only go near sliding glass door to the balcony, but I've got friends coming to stay with me two days after Christmas and that's the same area where the air mattress goes. And really I hate decorating it and then having to take it down a month later all by myself when I'm the only one who's going to see it. I think this is the first year that I haven't had a big tree, but it's all good.
That only took about 45 minutes, so I had plenty of time to do my workout DVD before dinner. I guess I really have no excuse to let the house get messy anymore ;)

December 16, 2007 lyrics of the moment
Walking through Central Park I'm in a foreign country and I'm waiting for a sign That it's okay for you to care Cause I'm not going anywhere And while you wonder if you should let me in I only want it to begin
I'm still singing Twisting humilities, breaking arrangements Thinking about my heart I guess you've heard, sometimes it's heavy But I just keep moving "Begin" by Ben Lee

December 15, 2007 almost done!
I think I've finished almost everything on my Christmas shopping list. I just have one more gift card to buy and that's it. Of course, I'm still waiting for some stuff I bought online to show up here, but it's probably better that way. I'm not a fan of the wrapping, so it's nice to spread it out.

December 12, 2007 odds and ends
We're supposed to get our first big snow tomorrow around mid-morning. I guess I'm not going home for lunch. I hope it doesn't affect all the packages I'm supposed to get the rest of this week. I'd really love to get all the wrapping done this weekend.
I'm really tired of strike replacement programming and it's barely started. I think it's time to turn off the tv completely and plug in the iPod. I've got to have background noise, but I just can't take "Deal or No Deal" five nights a week, even if they have Brian, Angela and Oscar from "The Office" on.
I'm sooo ready for the weekend.

December 10, 2007 2007: Year in Review
Previous Years: 2006 | 2005 | 2004
January: Today was actually pretty productive. February: It is finally Friday and that means my hell week is over at work! March: So, it's been a while - my bad! April: I have spent most of the night, writing various versions of two letters to the graduate schools to which I have been accepted. May: [YouTube video of Conan & Bob Sagat in SF] Seriously - this made me laugh until I cried. June: And a big, big, BIG HAPPY BIRTHDAY to KB who turns 30 today! July: I'm just watching the NBC coverage of the "Concert for Diana" and I wish I could be there. August: It's been a crazy week here - and it hardly feels like Friday since I'm not working :) September: So I watched The Queen on Wednesday night. Wow. Just...wow. October: Man, it is brisk out there! I haven't really experienced fall in a long time. November: Thanks to all of you who commented yesterday - I now have the confidence to take my Jim mug to work on Monday :) December: [weather advisory about snow] I guess it's good that it's happening tomorrow and not Monday, when I might have to deal with it more.

December 9, 2007 We. Have. JAMBA
One of the scourges of Jersey is the lack of Jamba Juice. JJ is the most perfect food because it's all fruit and ice, so it's totally good for you, but it also fills you up. But unless I wanted to go to Manhattan, I couldn't get one here in NBNJ.
Well, not anymore!
As I was driving past the new awesome strip mall off Rte 1, I noticed that one of the buildings in the middle of the parking lot that had formerly been empty is now home to a JAMBA JUICE! I actually did a little cheer in my car as I drove by! Of course, it's not actually open yet, but I can't wait :)
So, this place continues its streak as the most perfect shopping center ever because it has a White House | Black Market, Banana Republic, Ann Taylor Loft, Bandolino, NY&Company, Anthropologie, Starbucks and Jamba!

December 8, 2007 lyrics of the moment
I wish I could touch you again I wish I could still call you friend I'd give anything When someone said count your blessings now 'fore they're long gone I guess I just didn't know how I was all wrong They knew better Still you said forever And ever Who knew "Who Knew" by Pink

December 7, 2007 Homer has been HEALED!
So, four or five years ago, KB bought me a Homer Simpson Rubix cube. We proceeded to mix it up and then we couldn't get it back together. Homer has been out of joint from LA to SF to Oakland and now in Jersey. My dad told me about this kid in one of his 8th period classes at TJ who is like a master of the regular Rubix cube. CNN (or one of those news station) even came in one day to film him doing one.
So when I went down to my parents' house at Thanksgiving, I brought Homer. I told my dad to track down that kid and make him fix my Homer Simpson Rubix cube. Well, the Rubix cube club met today, so my dad gave that kid the cube. And of course, almost before my dad could even make it back to his classroom, the kid had it done. But yay! Homer is whole again!

Friday Fill-It-In:- I love Christmas.
- Multicolored ones are my favorite colors for the Christmas tree lights.
- The candles in the window have invisible bulbs since I don't have any.
- Love Actually is one of my most favorite Christmas movies.
- My favorite Christmas lyrics are
On the streets there's children laughing People smile as they are passing Christmas time is here, our waiting is done Wishing it could last forever Not just twelve days in December Through the year let's try to remember That special way That everyone feels It's the magic of Christmas day
Oh and God bless us everyone The good and the bad The happy; the sad Oh and God bless us everyone Here's to family and friends It's good to be here again
- I'm dreaming of a snow-free weekend.
- And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to doing nothing and watching something from Netflix, tomorrow my plans include errands and Sunday, I want to relax!

December 6, 2007 All About Dee-liciocity (TT#15)
12 Things I Love (and 1 Thing I Hate) That Start With D- Dell
He was my first friend in San Francisco. We met when he asked me to take notes for him in Prof S's class while he was on a field trip. Turns out he was going to Sac with Prof C's class and so was I. I met up with him and George! when I finally made it to the hotel and the rest is history - friends for life!
- Dirty Dancing
It's an American classic and I will not be embarrassed by my love of it. I want to wear that foofy pink dress that Jennifer Grey wears at the end. Swayze looks hot in that black tank top and pants. The music is catchy, the dancing is awesome and I never get tired of watching it.
- Doug Ross of ER
My love for Clooney will never die. I was introduce to Dr. Ross on our last week at the beach by my Aunt Denise. We rarely watched TV while in the house, but on Thursday night, she made us all be quiet and watch. And I went home from that vacation with a weekly appointment with Clooney and Dr. Ross every Thursday night. After Doug Ross left, the whole ER just lost its sparkle and it's never been the same.
- dimples
They're cute! I have 'em (they used to be more pronounced than they are now) and I love 'em. But only on the cheeks - chin dimples are weird and I don't like 'em!
- "The Daily Show"
Jon Stewart. Politics. Comedy Central. All ingredients for a fabulous show and he rarely fails to deliver. One of my lifetime goals is to meet him and/or be a guest on his show.
- dancing
I'm a dorky dancer. (hint, that's my next domain name, I think!) But I love to do it. Classical ballet or grooving to whatever's on the radio, I'm always ready to dance. Car dancing is actually my specialty (right, HT?), but I'm good on the floor as well.
- David Gray
KB turned me onto his music on day as we sat in traffic on Wilshire Blvd, trying to get the beach after work. After listening to nothing, but DMB for a week, I begged him to put anything else in the CD player. Gray's Babylon CD came on and I was in love. It's my soundtrack for that summer and his music always moves me. We saw him in concert a few years later and it was awesome. KB also looks amazingly like him, which just adds to the charm.
- December
The weather right now is not helping me, but I really do love this month. It's so festive with decorations in store windows, holiday music on the radio and just a vibrancy in the air that's hard to quantify. Now that I don't have to worry about concert season, I can soak up the ambiance without the stress.
- driving
I love to be on the open road in my car, just cruising along. I've loved my driver's license since the moment I got it and I can't imagine a worse punishment than taking it away. There's something so freeing about just getting in the car and going.
- Derek/Meredith
My "Grey's Anatomy" OTP. Right now, they are both being stupid because if Meredith would just let McDreamy in on the fact that she is really trying to work on herself, he wouldn't be getting these foolish notions of dating scrub nurses that have apparently always been there, he just never noticed. I loved to go back to season one and watch them fall in love. It's a trip.
- Dunkin Donuts
I live in the Northeast and now must worship at the altar of DD. It's actually really good, though I'm not a coffee drinker. Krispy Kreme is still my donut of choice, but I'll love DD because it's here.
- deer
I am in love with the deer in my backyard. I've named them all and created extensive backstories about them (complete with cliques). I love having wildlife like this (as opposed to the wild life around my apartment in Oakland!) around me. So pretty! And the thing that I hate:- Delaware
Sorry to the denizens of that state who happen to visit my blog, but every time drive through there I spend WAY too long sitting in traffic. Seriously, I can spend as much time (and toll money!) getting through the 10 miles in Delaware as I do most of the state of Maryland (about 100 miles!). It's ridiculous. I've been trying to come up with a plan to remove the state from the union (I really don't think anyone would notice), but so far, I've got nothing. Suggestions welcome.

December 5, 2007 starting to feel like a weather report
Snowed again here today. It started sometime after I got in this morning and was going full steam when I left for lunch. It slowed a bit in the afternoon, but made the commute home a little interesting. It started sticking to the parking lot and the road in front of my neighborhood a bit this afternoon, which wasn't really fun. I got to test the traction control on my car - not a good feeling. Luckily, it's supposed to be sunny tomorrow and I leave for work late enough that things should be melting and clean when I get going.
Am I the only one laughing in disbelief at the shit shows the networks are throwing out as replacement programming this month and next? I mean, competing choirs? Trust me, I've done that and there's nothing interesting in the slightest about a choir competition. I guess I'll have no good excuse not to get cracking on my bookshelf of unread books. And maybe I'll even find time to work out!

December 4, 2007 hating snow flurries
It flurried today, even though it wasn't supposed to do that until tomorrow. Of course, it's supposed to do it again tomorrow and we're supposed to get between a "covering" to an inch by the end of it all. Meh. So over winter and the Northeast. Already.
More Adults Are Doing Plies, Braving the Ice And Taking Classes Once Limited to Kids So how do I find something like this for me here? I've been dying to take ballet classes as an adult since I never did as a kid, but I haven't been able to find a studio that offers them. Sigh.
This Column Will Terrify You Never read his column before (that I can remember), but damn he makes some sense. My dad and I have been saying this for ages. Glad to finally see it in print. The best part though was the opener to his chat today: Today's column was about American insecurity and the attempt by some leading academics to understand it. The Bush administration is way ahead of them -- they understand our fears quite well. So this morning the president told us that even though Iran isn't building a bomb, it's still our duty to be very afraid...
I've been doing my Christmas shopping this week - online. It's so much more fun than going to the mall and having to find parking and carry all that crap. Now, I just point and click and it's waiting on my doorstep when I come home. Can't beat that. I'm finishing my shopping this weekend, so if you have a list you want me to buy from, send it to me. ;)

December 1, 2007 so not amused
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MOUNT HOLLY HAS ISSUED A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 5 AM TO 3 PM EST SUNDAY.
A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM WILL TRACK ACROSS THE GREAT LAKES SUNDAY AND THEN NEW ENGLAND MONDAY. A SECONDARY LOW WILL DEVELOP NEAR LONG ISLAND EARLY MONDAY AND THEN COMBINE WITH THE GREAT LAKES LOW MONDAY NIGHT NEAR CAPE COD. THIS DEEP STORM WILL THEN SLOWLY EXIT TO THE NORTHEAST MONDAY NIGHT AND TUESDAY.

THE SNOW WILL ACCUMULATE LIGHTLY BEFORE A TRANSITION TO SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN OCCURS BY NOON. THE ICE WILL THEN CONTINUE FOR A SHORT PERIOD BEFORE WARMER AIR ARRIVES AND CHANGES ALL THE PRECIPITATION TO RAIN BY LATE AFTERNOON. A LIGHT COATING OF ICE IS LIKELY BEFORE THE CHANGEOVER OCCURS. THE RAIN WILL CONTINUE OVERNIGHT AND THEN END BY SUNRISE MONDAY. A GUSTY WIND WILL DEVELOP MONDAY WITH GUSTS OVER 30 MPH EXPECTED.
A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY MEANS THAT PERIODS OF SNOW...SLEET...OR FREEZING RAIN WILL CAUSE TRAVEL DIFFICULTIES. BE PREPARED FOR SLIPPERY ROADS AND LIMITED VISIBILITIES...AND USE CAUTION WHILE DRIVING.
I guess it's good that it's happening tomorrow and not Monday, when I might have to deal with it more.
