November 30, 2007 linkage
I'm so happy it's Friday! It's payday and I need a weekend like you wouldn't believe. So, my blog post today will be lazier than some. I'm sure you can relate.
Sports are for kids You know, after reading this, I almost might considering having kids. It's cool to think that you can fool your kids into loving the things that you love because they don't know any different. Of course, as the column goes on, his daughter behavior scares me right back over to the "um, no thanks" side of the fence. Oh well!
ONION: Gin-Soaked Craig Kilborn Shows Up Broke, Homeless At SportsCenter Studio Okay, I know it's fake news, but this story just cracked me up when I read it! And really, that's sorta what he was like coming off any hiatus, so why should a life hiatus be any different? Hee!
Friday Fill-It-In:- When my blog is broken, I am confused because that's never happen to me before.
- I saw the most amazing um, jam of traffic trying to get across the bridge? this morning!
- Walk Hard is the new movie I'm most looking forward to seeing.
- Work: Necessary and time-consuming.
- Of all the new tv shows, I enjoy Private Practice the most. And that is really sad because I don't really even like it that much. I just like Kate Walsh.
- If only my clothes would fold themselves when the dryer is done.
- And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to going to bed early, tomorrow my plans include checking into a roll-over IRA (yep, I'm a grown up now) and Sunday, I want to get my Christmas cards out the door!

November 28, 2007 it's so true!
Mark Morford on Black Friday - Some say Christmas day most accurately captures the true nature of the American spirit. Some say it's Easter. Or the Fourth of July. They are all wrong. Black Friday has become, far and away, the most glorious expression of the true American idea, the gleaming capitalist leviathan at its most violent and orgasmic. Deny it at your peril.
What sort of adult doesn't know when to switch from a summer drink to a winter drink? Um, me?
And I'm sadly addicted to Kid Nation. Is that wrong?
Yeah, I was afraid of that...
So, to cheer myself up (and for Em), here's a photo of my awesome CK ballet flats I bought over the weekend:

November 27, 2007 just what I would expect
Laugh Lines in the Hollywood Strike “In years past, our picketing schedule has gone,'Picket on Mondays for two hours and then meet at a bar until the following Monday,'" said David Young, the union's director, early this month. "That’s not how we're going to do it this time."
Studio executives rolled their eyes, but they soon blanched as well-organized pickets fanned out across Los Angeles and New York, and only grew in intensity. It turns out, many union members say, that striking in Hollywood — at least short term — is not that bad. A lot of strikers say they are enjoying networking, taping YouTube videos, organizing theme days and dreaming up placard slogans.
I have to say, I've really been enjoying reading the updates at UnitedHollywood.com.
But this is my favorite part: The seeming contradiction between the serious strike and the circus sideshow was on display at the Hollywood Boulevard rally, which drew more than 4,000 people.
Writers pumped their fists in the air, cheered speeches by union officers and shouted slogans like, "On strike, shut 'em down. Hollywood's a union town."
Even the Teamsters were impressed.
"Wow," said Leo Reed, the gruff secretary-treasurer of Teamsters Local 399 and director of its motion picture division. "You are acting like a militant union."
Even my brotherhood is impressed ;) Yay WGA!

November 25, 2007 simply enchanted
It took 5.5 hours to get down to my parents' house on Wednesday afternoon. When I arrived down there, I demanded that we go to a movie to take the edge off my mood. I dragged my parents to see Enchanted with Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey and it definitely lived up to its title. It was a great, grown up fairytale with big musical numbers, scorching chemistry between the leads and happily ever afters all around. I want to see it again!
It was a crazy weekend, but I'm glad I had time at home. I liked spending time with the fam, especially the shopping! My parents purchased my Christmas presents and I got to take one of them home with me - yay! Of course, it's just a new winter coat, but seeing as it's getting crazy cold here already, it's kinda necessary.
I also got the most awesome pair of Calvin Klein ballet flats with money that my grandparents gave me for my birthday. They really are the most perfect shoes.
Friday Fill-It-Ins:- I enjoy talking to good friends more than anything else.
- Blogging satisfies my need for communication with people who are far away.
- When I look at a full moon, I feel wonder.
- If I want a snack, I usually reach for a bag of Doritos.
- The most recent movie I saw, Enchanted made me happy.
- If only I could eat what I want without gaining weight.

November 19, 2007 birthday girl
Overall, it's been a good birthday so far.
I woke up to snow showers this morning, which are scarier to me than I'd like to admit. I dressed as warmly as I could (which really isn't warm enough), breaking a new pair of pants purchased by my parents over the weekend for me. As much as I don't want to admit that I am the size that I am now, it's really nice to be able to breathe while sitting at my desk all day!
And then when I got back from lunch, my coworkers surprised me with a homemade cake. They also got me a card that they all signed and encouraged me to go out and do something different (like go to a movie, etc). Very sweet!
My two CDs I had ordered (Christmas by the Bay and Grey's Anatomy soundtrack, vol 3) from Amazon came today, so it's like I got a birthday present from myself! And it really was too because I was able to use the $25 gift certificate I won on Blingo to pay for it :)
I also got two sweet cards in the mail as well as tons of e-cards, Facebook wall posts and messages, MySpace comments, texts and voice mails wishing me a wonderful day. While my celebration on the particular day may be low key, it's been a great birthday. I've ordered my pizza (my luxury food item), I've got a load of clothes in the washer and I've changed into yoga pants and a hoodie. Feels pretty good. I'm really looking forward to what Age 27 has to offer :)

November 17, 2007 I don't know what the retailers are bitching about...
The mall was freakin' packed today! Mom and I went out for a little shopping spree since my birthday is coming up and I got paid yesterday. After all the stores, I ended up with two pairs of pants for work (thanks Mom and Dad!) in a size that I can actually breathe when I sit down. While I still refuse to accept that I am this new size, it's nice to have more than one pair of pants to wear to work that actually fits.
Cute stuff from my web surfing this week:
Dan takes W.A.T.C.H. to task for their list of 10 most dangerous toys because our toys were 10 times as dangerous as the ones on this list. I think I owned or had friends who owned 8 or 9 of these old school toys.
Em imagines the perfect website and I'm waiting for a kid at MIT to make it a reality.
This Fish describes her days in Lucca and I have to be glad that my passport's not in a readily accessible place so I don't hop a flight to Italy on a whim.
I'm glad to know that the strike hasn't changed Mindy and she's going into debilitating credit card debt for the fans. She's so dedicated ;)
And Bill Simmons cracks me up: Every day, I wake up with the same look on my face that George Clooney has when he awakens in his gorgeous Italian villa next to some supermodel, looks around, gathers his bearings, checks out the beauty next to him, smells his own morning breath and thinks to himself, "Oh, yeah, I'm George Clooney."

November 14, 2007 amta day and more
Can't believe it's been 8 years. Not a whole lot more to say about that.
I discovered a new procrastination tool today - Free Rice. Try it - you'll get addicted!
I watched Spanglish tonight and I'm sorry I didn't watch it sooner. What a great movie!
I got my December issue of "Real Simple" magazine today and it's my favorite thing in the world. I love shopping from my couch and I've gotten a ton of ideas for gifts for Christmas plus cute stuff for myself. I don't usually like to get Christmas-y before my birthday (t-minus five days!), but for the December "Real Simple," I'll make an exception.

November 11, 2007 I will never doubt Ben Affleck again!
Eugenia and I had a wonderful, if abbreviated, time in NYC. We shopped, we ate, we walked (A LOT) and generally just had a great time. As cliche as it is, I love the energy when I walking around the City.
I also WALK a lot more than I would in any other setting. Like I told Eugenia today as we walked from Greenwich Village to Penn Station, in any other city, if you told me I'd need to walk 30-40 blocks to get where I was going, I'd tell you to fuck off and get in my car. But we took 30 minutes and walked up there, saving cab fare and getting a great cardio workout. I think I'm beginning to understand why all the women in New York look like supermodels.
We ate REALLY well while we were there. Coffee and hot chocolate at Bonsignour Café. Pizza at Joe's Pizza. Yummy-ness at Tasti D-lite. A fabulous Italian dinner at Cucina Stagionale (the best chicken parm I've ever had!). Brunch at CamaJe. Awesome cupcakes and brownies at How Sweet It Is (best espresso brownies!). And we totally could have eaten more. I just love the food there :)

November 9, 2007 ha ha! I figured it out, New Jersey! Me FTW!
http://www.unitedhollywood.com
 - Plans and schedules are the only way I get things done. Seriously.
- I'm happy when things go exactly the way I plan them or better.
- The last thing I drank was apple juice. I'm so lame!
- One of the most valuable things in my life is my experiences.
- I like extra cheese and NOTHING ELSE on my pizza.
- Dear November, What up? How was your summer? Mine was weird. It's pretty cold and I'm kinda over that. Please be the month when the strike ends. Also, since you have my birthday, let's make it a great one, mmmkay? Your friend forever, Jenn
- And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to chilling out after I finish cleaning, tomorrow my plans include NYC!!! and Sunday, I want to go back to NYC for brunch and shopping!
I totally mastered how to get to the drive thru ATM. Trust me, in NJ, that is an accomplishment. I actually did a little cheer when I figured it out. It's only taken two previous trips and countless wasted minutes to do. Yay me!
Work was busy, but good. Actually talked with my boss about expectations and seems like she's pretty happy with me. She complimented me a bit and said that it does seem like I'm new or learning, which made me feel good. It's nice to just fit right in, even as I'm still trying to figure out my job. She's also in control of a lot more of her stuff and doesn't seem to need the hand-holding like previous bosses I've had, which is even awesome-r!
Eugenia's coming up tomorrow and we are NYCing for the weekend. It's going to be cold and possibly rainy, but I couldn't care less! It's NYC, baby and it never gets old!

November 8, 2007 too tired for the usual
I had a pretty busy day at work in the morning. Things were slower in the afternoon when my boss sees patients, but I kept myself amused. I also drank tea out of my Jim mug for the first time, so that was pretty cool.
Good episode of The Office tonight, but I'm not ready for the unintended hiatus after next week. Same with the rest of my shows - though they might make it until Christmas. This strike needs to be over now.
I can't believe it's already Thursday. Lovin' it though. Gotta clean the apartment tomorrow after work because Eugenia is coming to visit! Yep, she's the first non-related visitor and I'm super psyched! We're going to NYC on Saturday for some shopping, relaxing, drinking and who knows what else. I'm calling it a pre-birthday celebration - but mostly we are just kicking back after a long week in one of the awesomest cities ever ;)

November 7, 2007 hump day wrap up
Work continues to go well, though mostly chaotic. I think I'm doing well, but it's hard to tell sometimes. I finally have email at work, which is fabulous. I just love using email instead of the phone. I'm one of those people. And one of my fabulous coworkers (who votes in PA) gave me her 'I VOTED' sticker, so I love her more now!
Time for bed!

November 6, 2007 where's my 'I VOTED' sticker?!
I am not happy with my new home state. I like their voting machines. I like that the mayor had no opponent and I got for vote for an office called "Surrogate" (still have no idea what that is). But when I finished voting - there was no 'I VOTED' sticker! I inquired about it to the octogenarian woman manning the voting booth and she looked at me as if I was crazy. I'm not sure I can live in a land without 'I VOTED' stickers.

November 5, 2007 case of the Mondays
My body, much like the WGA, is on strike.
At work today, I squatted down to get something from the bottom shelf of the supply cabinet. And I thought I might have to stay there. I managed to crawl back to my desk without the notice of my coworkers and struggled onto my chair. Apparently, my hamstrings were not a fan of the semi-workout they received yesterday.
They won today as I did not attempt my yoga DVD. However, they will surrender tomorrow.

November 4, 2007 so weak!
So, a few weeks ago, I ordered Gurmukh's Kundalini Yoga DVD from Netflix. It took a couple of days get here because it had to come from Flushing, NY (hee!). Well, I finally took the time to try it out today and man, I'm SO out of shape! This workout is just what I remember from my years in LA at Golden Bridge in her class.
However, since I'm totally weak and flabby now, I could only get through about half of part two before I had to stop or risk falling down (and never getting up again). *THIS* is the kind of workout I was hoping to get from the yoga class I signed up with through the Borough. That class will probably help me with my flexibility (which I am also looking for), but to get the pounds off, Gurmukh is the answer (as always!)
Now that I see just how bad my body is, I hope that will motivate me to get to work after work instead of just sitting on the couch and watching TV.

November 3, 2007 not recommend: holding a phone therapy session with your gal pal in the middle of a card store
I went to the mall this evening and stopped in American Greetings to pick up some cards. A woman in the next aisle over was having a pretty loud conversation on her cell phone that seemed to be out of every Lifetime movie I've ever seen for women over 30. She started out with the whole, "trying to find out who I am" rationalization for not dating, which included a discussion of her engagement at age 26 which didn't work out, "but that's okay because I wasn't really ready to get married anyway."
I wasn't trying to listen in, but since the whole store could hear her start this little tirade, I didn't feel too guilty. She then continued on with the tried and true, "married people really aren't that happy anyway" angle. Apparently her friend Brian is married and not happy at all. Man, there's nothing like a single case study to prove an entire theory. Besides, she "rather be alone than stuck in an unhappy marriage. I'm better than that." Say it like you mean it!
I moved to the next aisle over, trying to catch a glimpse of the face of my entertainment, but she had moved to the next aisle over as well. Apparently, in the intervening silence, her cell phone gal pal had been delivering some generous words of wisdom to our aging single girl on the prowl. At the end, Miss Cell Phone laughed and proclaimed, "You are wise beyond your years, Lydia. Wise beyond your years." It took everything I had not to just burst out laughing.
Unfortunately, Miss Wise Beyond Her Years BFF Lydia wasn't wise enough to tell Miss Cell Phone that perhaps the Birthday Cards for Her aisle of the American Greetings store at the mall is probably not the best place to use all the single girl cliches in the book. Kept me amused though!

November 2, 2007 week one: check!
 - Talking on the phone to people who totally get me (KB, C, Anna, Eugenia, etc) is my favorite form of therapy.
- If you get my voice mail you'll hear "Hi, This is Jenn. I'm very sorry to have missed your call. Leave me a message and I'll call you back as soon as I can. Have a really great day!"
- My favorite product EVER is my awesome red sheets.
- I see something clothes strewn everywhere. I guess I need to clean up a bit around here this weekend.
- When I'm grumpy you should probably leave me alone or live to regret. Seriously - ask anyone ;)
- Being paranoid about talking about my strange habits on my blog is my strangest habit. Hee! Not really - just can't think of anything right now ;)
- And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to vegging out on the couch, tomorrow my plans include laundry, going to the dry cleaners and other fun errands and Sunday, I want to enjoy it!
Thanks to all of you who commented yesterday - I now have the confidence to take my Jim mug to work on Monday :)
I survived my first week and I have plenty of work waiting for me when the weekend is over. This is the first time in a long time I have had that happen AND I actually don't mind. Even though my work email STILL isn't set up correctly yet, I have tons to do and I'm learning a lot.
I *am* really happy it's the weekend though! It's really difficult to adjust to getting up at a regular time every day. It's pretty much the only thing I didn't miss about working ;)

November 1, 2007 All About the New Job (TT #11)
I thought about doing my favorite movies to catch on cable (probably coming next week) or my favorite moments on The Office (an easy fallback), but I figured since my first week at the new job is almost over, it would make a good subject.
13 Things About My New Job- Two of the three people I work with have names that start with B. Makes it hard to figure out blog nicknames - I'm workin' on it.
- The cabinet under my desk that I thought was a safe, actually houses the extra plates and napkins for the department. Yeah, I thought I was all badass with a safe under my desk - oh well!
- I got 100% on 4 of my 5 training modules yesterday. So, I'm a little badass ;)
- I still don't have an email address. Okay, I do have one, but it hasn't been set up on my computer yet. Fingers crossed for tomorrow!
- My boss said she likes what I've been doing so far. She mentioned that she knows there's a huge learning curve, but I've been doing well.
- I live close enough to work to come home for lunch every day. It probably doesn't save me any money, but there's something comforting about hanging out on the couch during lunch and watching tv.
- Even without an email address, I was super busy today. I have a feeling that this is going to be very different from my UCSF job.
- We average about 4 pieces of mail per drop. Another huge difference from my last job - where we got about 2 tubs full per drop.
- One of the faculty from my old department came to speak here last month, but I totally missed it. It's okay though - it wasn't one of my favorite faculty members anyway ;)
- I brought my photo frames with me today, so I've personalized my workspace a bit. Now I have my family and my two cuddlebugs (Payton and Maxson, if you are playing at home) smiling at me while I work.
- Today, I convinced the IT guy to install Firefox on my computer. I really hate IE and I haven't used Netscape since the mid-90s. I can't update the Flash plug-in, so it may not be as useful as I'd like, but I got it!
- I'm still working up the courage to bring in my silly mug.
- I learned today that New Jersey has 1 lawyer for every 5.1 people. Nothing more to say about that ;)
