September 28, 2007 updates from the homefront
I woke up to a request for a job interview at the Local Medical School (henceforth known as LMS), which is a pretty good way to do so. I also got an email from another department at LMS (the same department that I worked for at UC) requesting an interview next week. So, it looks like there might be options for me in the next couple of weeks.
Of course, reading this definitely takes the spring out of my step. Some people make me sick :(

September 26, 2007 life update
Things have been pretty quiet here. I had a job interview yesterday at an Ivy-Covered Institution (henceforth known at ICI), which went okay. I had to take a skills test down there today and meet with ICI HR. The Department should be making a decision next week sometime. It's my first and only interview of this job search, so fingers crossed for success.

September 21, 2007 adventures in unemployment
Well, I've been sending out resumes and applying for jobs for two weeks now. Haven't gotten any calls or any interviews, but I'm trying to stay positive. It doesn't help that there's nothing to watch on daytime television. Sure, when you have a job, you think there is, but I'm telling you - there's nothing.
Along with all of my job search activities, I think I'm going to try to find the beauty of my new state. C and I were joking on the phone last night that there should really be some sort of commission that approves state nicknames, so that places like NJ wouldn't be able to call themselves the Garden State without approval. So I figure I'll try to figure out what those nicknamers were talking about when decided on that one.
I think I'm doing okay.
I desire a place to work all day.
What if God was one of us?
The best thing about not having a job is not having to get dressed up.
When will I finally finish unpacking everything?
The best thing that happened to me so far this week is talking to C last night.
And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to watching a DVD. Tomorrow my plans include exploring NJ and Sunday, I want to watch the Redskins win again!
I can't be all serious here for very long. If you didn't watch the Emmys tonight, you need to watch the video above. Rainn Wilson was hysterical and Kanye West was a great sport.
Life is pretty good here. Thanks for all the emails, phone calls, texts and hugs. I've been spending the weekend with my family and just relaxing. I'll be heading back up to the Garden State tomorrow and starting my job search hardcore.
Let's get lost tonight You can be my black Kate Moss tonight Play secretary, I'm the boss tonight

September 12, 2007 it's done
It's not the way I'd really like to tell everyone, but it's easier than making a bunch of phone calls.
I dropped out of grad school today and I am in the process of getting a job.
After some very personal difficulties, I have decided that this program and the process of graduate school is not for me. It's not the goal that I want to attain and there was no need to put myself through the personal hardships that I had suffered so far.
I know this may remind some of you of incidents in the past and you may feel that this was not the right decision. However, I have discussed this with a great number of people, including my family and trusted advisor, and this is the best thing for me at this time. There may come a time in the future when I want to go back to school to study political science, but this is not it.
I've closed the comments, but you are welcome to email me. It is a done deal, so at this point, I'd prefer your support instead of criticism, but I am prepared for either.

September 7, 2007 what did you do on your summer vacation?
Yes, I am ignoring the fact that the Giants lost hardcore last night to the Nationals while I watched from RFK.

September 1, 2007 the People's Princess
So I watched The Queen on Wednesday night.
Wow.
Just...wow.
I didn't necessarily understand the Queen's actions any better from this film, but it was interesting to see an interpretation of her side of the story. I hadn't realized that it was Tony Blair who first used the title phrase and I also didn't realize what a popularity boost he got from his response to the tragedy.
But the most interesting thing for me was the use of original footage and how that still affects me, ten years later. Seeing the crowds of people around Buckingham palace. The flowers and other tributes that multiplied around the gates and were almost 500 ft deep at one point. The cortage making its way down the street with people throwing flowers to it. It made me remember hearing the news on the Labor Day retreat and not really knowing what to do. Getting up early, around 3am, on the day of her funeral to watch it on TV with my mom - just like I did for her wedding to Prince Charles. Seeing millions of people gathered in the streets of London, but only hearing the horses' hoofbeats in the deafening silence.
It's been ten years and I didn't know her, but I still cried. To me, she was a strong, confident woman, battling her demons and the press and I think the world lost a great deal on that day. I can only hope we've gained something too in the legacy she left behind.
