November 29, 2006 crazydelicious
Well, my "missing" coworker showed up to work today, surprised that we were all worried about him. Apparently, he told the one person who would never remember to tell anyone else that he wasn't going to be at work yesterday - but we didn't know that. Glad to know that he's okay.
Got a great email from Erin and I'm really excited to see Baby Payton next month :) Who knew that the little guy would have me so wrapped around his chubby little finger when I've only met him once?! Disclaimer: I love Baby Payton, but I'm still enforcing the baby embargo, so don't think that I've gone to the Dark Side. Not happening.
I've got most of my Christmas shopping "done." I can't actually purchase until this weekend since I don't get paid until Friday, but I know what I'm going to get. That's always the hard part for me. Luckily, I got an easy member of the family to buy for in the name draw, so that totally helps!

November 26, 2006 back to reality
This holiday weekend has been incredibly relaxing, which is exactly what I needed. It was great to have my parents come to me for Thanksgiving, even if they had to deal with the madness of the airport. I was able to run errands, eat good food, enjoy my family and still have some time to just sit and do nothing, which I sorely missed in the weeks leading up to it.
Of course, now I have to get back to work, grad school apps and all that other good stuff before I head back East for Christmas. But with this little break from reality, I think I have the strength to do it - at least for now ;)

November 21, 2006 meme for Monday from TNI
I'm too lazy to post a real entry about today and I'm also starting to get in the holiday mood, so enjoy this meme ;)- Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate?
I'm really not into egg nog at all - though K had a chai egg nog from Peet's on Saturday night that was really tasty. But hot chocolate is still my Christmastime beverage of choice.
- Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree?
Santa didn't wrap his presents. They were always sitting out by the stereo in and around my stocking.
- Colored lights on tree/house or white?
Definitely colored lights on the tree! I don't own yet, so no lights on the outside for Jenn, but one day...
- Do you hang mistletoe?
Nope, never really saw the point to it.
- When do you put your decorations up?
The day after Thanksgiving - nothing says Christmas like Black Friday sales and decorating in a trytophan (sp?) coma ;)
- What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)?
Mac & Cheese - there's a way that Grandma makes it that is just divine! Oh and Grandma's gravy - it's not Thanksgiving (or Christmas) without it ;)
- Favorite Holiday memory as a child?
I don't know that I have a favorite - I always love Christmas!
- When and how did you learn the truth about Santa?
I don't remember any real defining moment. Besides, I still get presents from Santa, so who's to say what's true? ;)
- Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve?
When I was in high school, I would have to sing at the midnight Christmas Eve service, which meant that my parents and I wouldn't get home until after 1am. We started a tradition of opening our presents from each other while we were still up so that we could sleep in later in the morning before going to my grandparents. I guess it's technically Christmas morning at that time, but it counts as Christmas Eve in my book.
- How do you decorate your Christmas Tree?
Um, with ornaments and lights? I don't really have any particular order or color scheme or anything. All my ornaments are ones that I've either made, collected through my travels or collected as a keepsake (like the White House ornaments, the Kennedy Center ornament from the year we played there, etc).
- Snow! Love it or Dread it?
Dread it! I hate shoveling it, driving in it, and just dealing with it. That's why I moved to a place where it doesn't do that ;)
- Can you ice skate?
Sorta. It takes me some time (and some falls) to warm up, but I can usually do a lap around the rink without falling. I'm no Kimmie Meisner, though.
- Do you remember your favorite gift?
It varies from year to year. I'm pretty sappy when it comes to gifts anyway, so if you give it to me, I'll love it. True story.
- What’s the most important thing about the Holidays for you?
Being with my family. Living so far away from everyone, I've kinda gotten over the craziness and stress of the holidays. I just want to have everyone I love in the same room, being nice to each other. Gifts, food - it's extras once I have that.
- What is your favorite Holiday Dessert?
Gingerbread house - I'm a master at making them and at eating them ;)
- What is your favorite holiday tradition?
Church on Christmas Eve - I've missed one Christmas Eve service at St. Matt's in my whole life and I was pretty grouchy that Christmas. I just love how warm and familiar everything is. I'm a total sap, but I just love how beautiful the place looks when we turn out the lights and sing "Silent Night" while passing the candlelight.
- What tops your tree?
A silver star that I picked up at Target about 5 years ago - it's cute and it usually stays where I put it ;)
- Which do you prefer giving or receiving?
I usually prefer giving because there's nothing like finding the right gift for the right person and watching them open it. Receiving isn't bad though ;)
- What is your favorite Christmas Song?
Geez, it would be easier to ask me which songs I don't like! I absolutely love "O Holy Night," though, when sung by a breathtaking soprano.
- Candy Canes! Yuck or Yum??
I'm not really a fan of the peppermint ones, but I love the other flavored ones. I think I still have some of those left from last Christmas ;)

November 19, 2006 Thank you!
I have to say a big THANK YOU to everyone for all the cards, phone calls, voice mails, Facebook comments, blog comments, MySpace comments and flowers! You know know how to make a girl feel pretty good about getting older ;)
And one of my favorite parts about my birthday - the "personalized" horoscope! From the Detroit News: If November 19 is your birthday Lucky Scorpios born on this date can look forward to added energy and the ability to follow through on some big plans made recently. You are a powerhouse of industry when pursuing any important ambition this year, particularly between now and July. March and April are somewhat favorable for financial transactions. In July and August, tread carefully, do everything by the book and avoid starting anything of major importance, including adding extra debt to your load or lending anyone money.
I like it all up until the last sentence because that's when I intend to enroll in grad school and of course, take on massive debt - eek!
From the New York Post: November 19, 2006 -- Your options are almost unlimited and there is precious little you cannot do, but for best results you must choose the direction you want your life to go in and you must commit yourself to it one hundred per cent. The secret of success is to focus on one aim at a time and stay with it until it is finished. Fortunately you are a Scorpio and know what staying power is all about.
From the Baltimore Sun: This can be a money year for you if you are serious about turning your knowledge into a viable commodity. Rely on past experience. There are no corners to cut if you want to excel. Opening up to all possibilities and accepting suggestions along the way will help speed up the process of getting ahead. Your numbers are 18, 26, 28, 33, 37, 40
Thanks for everything, everyone! I feel very loved today :)

Happy Birthday to Me!
I just home from dinner with my friends in the City and it was excellent! Good friends, good food and lots of laughs. We had some trouble finding a place to eat after my original plan didn't work out so well, but it all ended up working out in the end. Aren't K and I so cute?!
I miss being able to hang out with everyone all the time. I'm glad we all have staggered birthdays throughout the year, so we can still see each other.
And I'm definitely looking forward to doing nothing and just enjoying the rest of the day :)

November 17, 2006 workin' for the weekend
Oh. My. Gosh.
Today went from bad to worse to worser still before it went back to just bad. My coworker went home sick again. The other guy in the office was sick, but had to come in for a meeting and was pissy. I was trying to do 75 things at once, on my own, without leaving the desk and everything that usually goes like clockwork (lunch order for the meeting, etc) was totally screwed up. By the time I finally got lunch, I had had it. Luckily after lunch, things calmed down and I had a reasonable afternoon.
But I'm so happy it's Friday because I really don't think I could take anymore in good humor. I'm *so* looking forward to hanging out with everyone tomorrow and just enjoying the weekend, sans grad school stuff. There's things I need to do, but I'm taking the weekend off because it's my birthday and I want to, dammit! So there!

felt like Monday - but tomorrow's Friday...
It was kinda weird to be back in the office after taking the day for that class yesterday. My coworker left early because she's sick and everyone else was out, so I spent the entire afternoon all by myself in the suite. Sounds cool, but it kinda sucked too. Oh well! Fridays are always busy for me, so I guess I can make up for it tomorrow.
I finally picked a place to go out to dinner on Saturday. Picked the same one we went to in January because apparently I am incapable of change. Or something. Mostly I just don't know restaurants in the City and I know I liked the food at this place and it won't break my budget. As long as we all have a good time - that's all I care about ;)
KB asked me today how I feel about my birthday and I didn't really have an answer. Most of the time, I don't really even think about it. I'm not going to lament the downward slide towards 30 or lack of direction, focus and significant other that I constantly find myself dealing with. Instead, I'm just happy I won't be "drinking in LA." Because drinking in SF is so. much. better!

November 15, 2006 development, huh?
I went to class today. A couple weeks ago, my officemate asked me if there were any classes on the development and training website that I would like to take to enhance my skills. The department pays for them, so what the hell? I found a class on Word that dealt with skills that I hadn't ever used, so I signed up.
Now I should be used to this by now, but the class moved incredibly slow and while the instructor was fine, she was also trying way too hard to make it more interesting than it was. We had a workbook that detailed each "lab" so I found the whole "being in class" thing to be redundant. Just give me the workbook and I can use the step-by-step instructions the next time I actually have to use these skills.
Luckily, the instructor was cool with us "fiddling" around on the internet, so I got a lot of reading on various websites done while waiting for everyone else to catch up. And I ended up eating lunch with some co-workers who happened to come by to go to lunch with another girl in the class - totally random! And the weirdest part was the girl from class has the same name as a friend's wife - I'd never known anyone who had that name before I met his wife and now I know two! Craziness!
I did some online browsing for Christmas and I realized that I hadn't shared my new obsession yet. I've always been a fan of the Amazon.com wishlist, but this seems so much better because you can link to any site/store on the internet with exactly what you want. I have only begun to scratch the surface:
Now, when I find stuff in a catalog I can just throw it up on my Kaboodle page instead of having a pile of catalogs in my living room with the pages turned down - yay!

November 13, 2006 and then? I got summoned for jury duty...
The rainy season has begun - blech! I was soaked through once I finally got home. BART took for-ev-ah today because of some stupid error at a station before mine, so I didn't get home until almost 7! Sucks!
And I got a jury summons in the mail today. After all the crap I went through when I lived in SF, that just sent chills down my spine. Hopefully, it will be painless or they won't even need me to go in. Fingers crossed!

November 12, 2006 total slacker
I've been going through and tagging my entries, which I think may be messing up people who get my RSS feed. If so, I apologize, but expect it to continue for a while since I love tagging ;)
I have been a total slacker today and I loved it! Today was the first day that I didn't have to drill myself on vocab or algebra or take another stupid practice test that didn't accurately predict how I was going to do on the real thing anyway. I've been working on my SoP some, so I guess I'm not totally slacking, but at the same time, I really haven't been working on it that hard.
Of course, now that the sun is down, it's starting to kick in that I have to go to work tomorrow. I have a ton of stuff that needs to get down before I crawl in bed and I'm just starting it now. But I think I deserved one down day :)

November 11, 2006 rocked it!
I switched to BloggerBeta yesterday, so that I could have these awesome "labels" (known every where in the world as "tags") because I love categorizing things! Unfortunately, my FTP publishing and BloggerBeta don't always get along, so I never know when things are going to update correctly. I hope this will go through. We'll see.
I just got home from taking the GRE. My arm is totally sore from having the keyboard at such an awkward angle for so long, but it was totally worth it. I got the scores that I needed to be competitive (according to Prof C) and as long as I didn't fuck up the writing section, I should be good to go with my grad school apps. You have no idea how awesome this feels. I was totally stressing about this test because it was my only shot to take it and I did really well. Not a personal best, but way better than I expected on the real thing.
Now I just have to figure out how to celebrate without going too crazy tonight :)

countdown to my future
I had the day off work today, which was lovely. While I had all these grandiose plans of studying, practicing and studying some more for the GRE, I spent most of the day screwing around. And I actually feel okay about that. Hopefully, after tomorrow, this blog will become about more than me and this stupid test, but I make no promises. Any good thoughts, prayers, vibes, etc you could spare for me would be greatly appreciated :)

November 8, 2006 KICK. SOME. ASS.
I'm too tired after too much excitement tonight to post something befitting this occaision, but suffice to say, I've got a smile on my face and it's a good night. As much as my internship last summer killed me and took away my whole summer - it was worth it because of tonight. A big congrats to all my buddies who worked their butts off in my absence and pulled off something fabulous!
I spent the evening with C and his people which was really nice. I was actually pretty helpful in tabulating the results and looking at precincts, counties, etc. I had such a great time working on that. I just love election day - win or lose - but winning just feels so much better.
Keep the hope alive for those races that haven't been called yet. It's not over until every last vote is counted.

November 7, 2006 early and often!
Yep, it's time for my annual plea for those who read this to go to the polls tomorrow and exercise your power as a member of a representative democracy. I convinced a very good friend of mine to register to vote for the first time in his life this year and I feel very proud about that. I hope that all who are registered make the trek to their polling place and cast their ballot.
If you need information about what is on your particular ballot, go here to study up before you go. Prepare a sample ballot and be ready for all the questions, so that you don't suffer from voter fatigue. Our ballots in California are quite cumbersome (not to me personally, but to the voting public) and those down-ballot measures can suffer when people stop voting after the national or statewide offices. If you need your polling place, you can go here to look it up.
This is a big election for our country and for me personally. I gave up my summer last year to work on many of the House races that will be in the spotlight tomorrow. There are a lot of things being decided tomorrow - governorships, statehouses, state constitutional amendments, judgeships, propositions, municipal governments and local measures. These things matter to everyone, whether you believe that or not. So grab an umbrella (just in case it's raining) and your sample ballot and get out there. Get your "I VOTED" sticker and feel proud that you participated. In our representative republic, it is not often that the masses are asked to voice their opinions individually, so grab the chance while you've got it!

November 5, 2006 another belated one
Tech and Cal won yesterday, but the Redskins couldn't hold it together today. It's been that kind of weekend for me as well.
Yesterday, I got totally distracted by nothing in particular and lost most of the day to mindless television and Shrek 2 (courtesy of NetFlix). I did go grocery shopping at the new supermarket I found. There's one across the street from my apartment complex, but no matter what time you go in there (day or night), the lines to check out are horrendous. It usually takes as long to pay for your food as it does to shop for it. The other one is a little further away, but I can get my groceries so much quicker, even with driving to and from it.
Today, I slept in a little and got my requisite screwing-around-because-it's-the-weekend done before noon (or so). I took another Verbal/Math practice test for the GRE and scored either the same or better than my practice test from last weekend, so I'm starting to feel a little calmer about Saturday's BIG TEST. However, good wishes, vibes and prayers on the day of would still be greatly appreciated.
I'm going to do a little bit of laundry and another practice test. I also have to make my lunch for this week and get myself psyched up for the week ahead. Whoo-hoo!
ETA: Okay, ESPN GameCast totally lied to me in the final seconds of the game and I didn't follow up on it because who needs to read about another loss. I don't get to see the games live here because my FOX affiliate sucks and won't show any non-49ers game. I have now been told repeatedly that they won, so it was a winning weekend. Go Skins!
