I've been reading a lot of news lately, and you get to benefit from it. Enjoy!

Dumb People Make Children Cry
Funny article about a stupid decision PBS made. I don't usually like the Chronicle, but this was pretty good.

Stuff 101: College-Bound Kids Want All the 'Essentials,' So They Cram for the Trip to Campus
I just had conversation with my mom about this. After having been through this myself, I seriously believe that kids and their parents shouldn't be allowed in stores like that until the kids have been in college for a couple of months. You spend so much money on crap that is just not necessary because you are being marketed so heavily and you don't know what you are going to need. It's just craziness.

July 27, 2006 "Life is like a coin. You can spend it any way you wish, but you only spend it once." -Lillian Dickson
First a couple of articles I found over the past couple of days:
The Great Divide - interesting article about life-altering events (like marriage and babies) and how they affect friendships
Letter Rs Stolen From Ind. Signs Returned - this one caught my eye because of the dateline - GREENCASTLE, INDIANA - why didn't we think of this?!

Today had its ups and downs, but it ended up being good, so I'm filing that in the good column. There are days that I feel like I like my job and there are days when I feel like the MUNI train could run over me and that would actually be an improvement (like yesterday). I got the clothes to the dry cleaners on time and I am almost done with my first solo loads of laundry in the new building.

Tomorrow should be good and I'm already anticipating the loveliness the weekend. Almost two weeks down.

July 26, 2006 calming breezes
The weather finally calmed down today. I still got sweaty when I walked home from the BART station, but at least I could just open the windows without turning on the fan to cool the apartment down. We're supposed to be back to normal by the weekend and I can't wait. Hard to believe the temp is going to drop 40 degrees between weekends, but I welcome the change.

Bought a plane ticket to go back East for Labor Day weekend. I figured that since I wasn't coming back for Thanksgiving that I should make a quick trip to see how everyone is doing before Christmas. I'd love to get together with everyone if you're around that weekend. I know time is limited, but I *am* flying 3300 miles, so perhaps getting some coffee might not be too much effort - I'm just saying ;)

Work was good today. I actually had projects to occupy my time for most of the day - I like being busy. I didn't feel stupid at all today, which is definitely a plus. I've got dinner plans on Friday. If only I could get to the dry cleaners before it closes, life would be perfect!

July 25, 2006 "The Heat Is On In Saigon" (and also the Bay Area)
Damn it's hot. There's just nothing more I can say. It feels like the backdraft from a bus outside and I have no air conditioning. This evening it has cooled down some, but man, I am tired of triple digit temperatures here at the homestead. It makes me lazy and I just didn't get very much accomplished this weekend.

I got my diploma today! Well, my parents did. I had it mailed to their house because I knew that I wouldn't be living in my old apartment when they finally got around to mailing them out. But I am truly a graduate, for real and true. Whoohoo!

I forgot my lunch this morning, which sucked because I had to buy lunch. But on the upside, I don't have to make a lunch for tomorrow. I also took some photos to work today to decorate my desk. So, some of your lovely faces are smiling back at me at work now. Gets me through the day ;)

July 20, 2006 one more day left
Even though he was late, I met M for lunch, which was really nice. We chatted about a lot of things and it was nice to catch up. Hard to believe we hadn't seen each other since graduation! He was supposed to stop by Prof C's office during our class earlier this summer, but he came by after I left that day.

I signed up for Netflix and my first two movies are winging their way here as we speak. I added 38 movies to my queue without even blinking - who knew I had missed so many movies?! Most of them are totally cheesy teen/chick flicks that I didn't see in the theatre because I know that no one else would go with me - but now I can watch them in the privacy of my own home for free. He he!

I had Jamba Juice for dinner, but I'm still hungry - that never happens. And I had Subway for lunch, so I should be stuffed. Hmm...

talk to me about Netflix
I got one of those free trial offer postcards in my mail yesterday and for the first time, it sounded like a good deal. There are a ton of movies that I always meant to see, but never did in the theatre and never rented because I never had any time while I was in school. Now with summer television sucking, I'd love to catch up on videos, but I'm too lazy to find a Blockbuster. So, those of you who have Netflix, what do you think? Do you like it? Too expensive? Is it worth it?

Today went okay, I guess. I'm glad to be over the hump of the first week. I'm still waiting for my 'yeah' moment, but maybe that'll happen next week. M stood me up for lunch (again), but promises to meet up with me tomorrow. We'll see.

And if I felt stupid on the verbal section - my math skills are WRETCHED! Of course, that I already knew, so it wasn't a big surprise. Well, I was a little shocked to find out how much I had really forgotten, not having done anything real math since 2003. I mean, I forgot the area of a triangle is .5 base times height! Eek! More practice definitely needed there ;)

July 19, 2006 Too stupid for grad school (and today's other lessons)
As I'm sure you can tell, the Kaplan GRE prep book and I didn't have a good lunch together this afternoon. I rock sentence completion and sorta rock reading comprehension, but analogies and antonyms are now my mortal enemies. My vocabulary is apparently the same as a 14 year olds or something. And I thought the verbal would be my strong section. Sigh.

The woman I sit next to, MCB, has a British accent and with my proclivity for accent immitation, I spend most of the day thinking in a British accent and hoping that she won't notice that I'm two words away from out and out immitation. She's quite a sweet lady and is doing quite a lot to make me feel welcome in the office. Can't believe tomorrow is already Wednesday and yet the weekend can't come fast enough. I am still having a bit of a problem with the word "permanent" but I'm trying to get over it.

I definitely have to get to sleep earlier than the past two days because I am just not going to make it otherwise. I get to have lunch with M tomorrow, which will be lots of fun, I'm sure. I haven't seen him since graduation, which was just far too long ago.

July 18, 2006 movie marketing (not my first day story)
Though I'm sure everyone is dying to hear about how my first day of work went, I've told the story about four times tonight and I just can't do it anymore. To sum up - the morning was not great and the afternoon went better. I wouldn't go as far as to say that I am looking forward to work tomorrow, but I am not facing it with the same trepidation as this morning.

I talked to KB on my way home tonight and we discussed (indirectly) the way movies are marketed - specifically Talladega Nights. Before tonight, I had seen half a trailer for the film and a bunch of bus ads showed up in the last couple of weeks around here. I asked KB what he had heard about the movie since we are both Will Ferrell fans. Apparently, in KC, the trailer is playing nonstop - he can't get away from it. I guess they are really playing it up to the Nascar crowd and we ain't it! Of course, I think that the movie is kinda skewering the Nascar crowd which I wouldn't think they would take kindly to, but whatever.

I saw Nacho Libre and The Devil Wears Prada yesterday. I haven't seen a movie in the theatre since January and then I see two in one day. It was really cool. I liked both movies for different reasons, though I didn't like some of the changes they made to DWP. The book is better - so what else is new?

I've got a couple hours before I really have to get to bed, so I'm going to try to enjoy them in a relaxed way - chicken tacos and television :)

July 16, 2006 posting for the sake of posting
It's been a wild and crazy week, with ups and downs and a lot of in between. Just dropped my parents off at the airport and am now sitting on the couch, watching My Fair Brady and screwing around on the internet.

I'm all over the place emotionally, so I'm not really going to try to do a proper post. I figured I'd post so everyone would know that I'm alive and well in the East Bay. Email's probably the best way to get details out of me at this point.

I'll try to post pictures of the new place in a few days. I usually promise to post them but then I never get the apartment justso enough to take the photos and it doesn't happen. Control freak strikes again. We shall see.

July 6, 2006 paper cut from a wedding invitation and other tales
Today has been exhausting, frustrating, surprising and boring - not all in that order and sometimes all those things at once. This'll probably be the last time I have to blog for a while as my every waking moment from here on out will be consumed with either grading (Thursday) or packing/moving.

There's still so much that is up in the air - and you know how much I love that - but I took the night off to just sit on the couch and watch mindless MTV to chill out. Sure, I should have done a million things tonight, but after Summer and Kate took care of the two that I was most worried about while I was having office hours, I just took that as a sign that I should relax. I feel like I've been going a million miles an hour and doing a hundred things at once - and none of them well - while being absolutely nowhere and getting nothing done.

I'm not even that worried about class tomorrow because there is so much going on tomorrow that isn't related to my leading the discussion - I can't even worry about it. I mean, I know I'll be freaked when I get up there, but it's only 20-30 minutes and if I bomb - well, I'm okay with that. I have lots of mini muffins to make up for it!

July 5, 2006 Feeling quite liberated, actually...

The day started off with me sleeping through my alarm. The day ended with me burning my fingertips on my muffin pan while trying to take them out of the oven and talk on the phone at the same time.

And yet? Pretty great day.

I spent the day sightseeing and being touristy with Summer and Kate and it was lovely. The weather was gorgeous for July in the City and I had a wonderful time. I'll be sad to see them go home tomorrow. Sniff, sniff! Tomorrow is an increasingly busy day and the rest of week looks to be as well. You'd think moving would get easier with all the practice I've had and yet, it hasn't.

July 3, 2006 the joys of moving
Well, I have spent most of the day on the phone, but I feel like I've accomplished something. I have changed my address, transferred and/or cancelled service with my insurance, cable, phone, internet, long distance, and electric companies. Whew!

While I was on the phone with my cable company, my cell phone rang and I got a second interview at the place I interviewed with last week. Score! Of course, it makes my already-crazy Thursday just that much more crazy, but hopefully, it will be worth it.

Now, I have to get back to packing before Summer and Kate return from their adventures.

status check
Summer and Kate have arrived and are just as fabulous as I remember.

I have packed 5 boxes - all books and it doesn't look like I've done anything.

I bought season 1 of both The Office and Grey's Anatomy, just because. Ditto the dozen Krispy Kremes I picked up while I was out as well.

Much to do tomorrow.

July 2, 2006 I. Am. Correct.
I picked up the keys to the apartment today. I also got my brows waxed and did a little shopping before sitting in traffic to come back across the bridge. I have not been as productive as I should have been this afternoon, though I have cleaned a fair amount. There is still more that needs to be cleaned and more that should be cleaned and straightened, but won't be. And I'm okay with that. Happy July!

July 1, 2006 Last Day as a City Resident
I finally got the photos from fall semester up in my photo gallery - only took six months! It's still password protected, so if you need the password, email me.

My job interview went very well and I hope to have a second interview next week. Fingers still crossed!

Tomorrow I pick up the keys to my new apartment and officially become an East Bay-er. New address is coming in a mass email this weekend. At some point, I'll be going off line (probably next weekend) while I make the transition to the new place. Don't miss me too much.

Now I must continue packing and cleaning as Summer and Kate will be here in about 36 hours! Eek!
