June 29, 2006 The curse is broken!
Well, I went to the Giants game this afternoon - AND THEY WON! It was the first sweep of the season and the first weekday day game win :D It's the first time I've seen them win in person and it was very exciting! Of course, that was just the icing on the cake of my fabulous day.

I had a fabulous class with Prof C today. We got through all the lecture material and got to play a little as well. The kids did well on the quiz and I didn't have to stay up all night grading. Yay for me!

I also got a job interview lined up for tomorrow thanks to C's resourcefulness this afternoon. Fingers crossed!

stupid BlackHole - it's a person, not a place!
The Giants just won their second game against the Rangers, 5-1 with a fabulous Grand Slam by Ray Durham. Here's hoping their luck holds out tomorrow. I've got a new Giants shirt to wear to the game, so I hope it's a winner ;)

I'm procrastinating grading right now. It's actually going really quickly (the kids are doing well), but I'm just not in the mood. I think I understand why Prof C detests grading so much now. I mean, I still like it way better than he does and much better than standing up in front of the class, but it isn't as fun this time around. And it's going to get even less fun next week when I'm grading quizzes and blue books in one afternoon.

My day didn't start off well, with little sleep and going to campus to return something to Prof C only to find out that he didn't need it this morning after all. But I powered through and had some laughs with D and C after all, so it's all good. Tomorrow, it's class (covering parties and elections - my favorite!) and then a Giants game, so it should be a great day.

June 27, 2006 "And that's the quote of the day!"

I got about 3 hours of sleep last night and didn't get either book read, but I ended up having a great day. Go figure.

Class went well despite my inability to answer questions for the students; I faked it and for the most part, I don't think they could tell. And if they could, meh! I volunteered to grade this quiz so that the kiddos could get it back before the last class of the semester. I'm such a benevolent spirit - and I guess I don't have enough going on tomorrow night :)

Got into a little bit of a reading war with C - which I WON, thankyouverymuch! Though, to be fair, he was watching World Cup soccer instead of reading most of the time and he started out ahead of me, but I WON, dammit! And of course, he probably finished reading after we parted ways this afternoon and I fell asleep on the couch when I got home, but whatever. Like I said to him - I so rarely have the upper hand and I liked it.

Tonight's plan is:
  1. finish this book
  2. finish the discussion questions
  3. email said discussion questions to Prof C
  4. choose quiz questions
  5. think about discussion activity
  6. unload dishwasher
  7. get boxes out of the car
The first three HAVE to get done tonight or I'm in the doghouse with Prof C. The rest would be nice, but I guess I could do them tomorrow if necessary. Okay, Giants game is on, so I'm out!

Chances are people you don't even know are being introduced to your journal every day, either randomly or through someone else. In addition to recent entries, people can get to know you better by what you posted in the past. With that in mind, post a link to your entries on this day exactly three months ago, six months ago, nine months ago, a year ago, 2 years ago, 3 years ago and 4 years ago. June 23, 2006 mail forwarding
Well, the Giants are warming up to play the A's as the fog rolls into the city and reminds us that yes, it is truly summer, so I'll be brief. It's 80s night at PacBell and the boys are wearing their retro uniforms - though I have to admit, I'm a bit disturbed that the 80s are now "retro" ;)

Today was a goof off day for me, though I did get some serious and responsible stuff done this morning. I am only getting-the-keys-in-my-hand away from having a new apartment, so expect a change of address mass email in your boxes next week. I also applied for a bunch of jobs, so perhaps there will be good news on that front next week as well.

I watched DVDs and played on the internet and basically ignored the world today. I even slept in - to all of 8:30! I guess since I got up at 6:25 yesterday, 8:30 *is* technically sleeping in, but still...meh!

  1. I'm addicted to C's seats at PacBell - they're free and super cool ;) Look at me - I'm a Giants fan now! *grins*
  2. My dream house has a wrap around porch and his/hers sinks in the master bathroom.
  3. Last night I fell asleep on the couch sometime after the Daily Show.
  4. There's nothing wrong with doing nothing today since I'll be working my ass off over the weekend. Uh huh.
  5. When I was a kid, it was 80s night every night and it *wasn't* retro!
  6. This weekend I shall read both Phillips and Johnson, write discussion questions for Johnson and not have fun at the Pride Parade like I want to because I am a dedicated TA. Or something.
Now, I just have to figure out what to have for dinner without actually cooking. Perhaps it's time for a trip to Safeway!

3-2-1 to go
Turns out the quiz delimma was a non-issue, so no worries! Today went really well, despite our ongoing technological issues. I'm loving this TA thing - I'm finally getting good at it and the class is mostly over. We have two lectures and one discussion session left before the end of the semester. I think it works because I know Prof C so well, having taken so many classes with him. He's keeping up his subtle (and not-so-subtle) hints about grad school - we'll see.

I came home and took a nap. I just got up way too early this morning and I couldn't take it any more. I didn't even set my cell phone alarm - it was really nice! I feel like I haven't really slept well all week what with preparing for my class and then the grading fiasco. It's been a great experience though and I'm very grateful to Prof C for letting me get a tiny taste of what he goes through on a daily basis.

June 22, 2006 vile quizzes
I have finally finished grading the quizzes my students took on Tuesday. I had one paper without a name on it and two students who signed in, but I have no grade for them. This is not good - a delightful convo with Prof C is guaranteed for tomorrow, I'm sure.

I got pleasantly sunburned at the Giants game this afternoon. I wore a different orange shirt and they still lost. If they won all the other times I wasn't at the game, I might think I was a jinx. However, the Giants inability to put together any sort of winning streak has disabused me of that notion. I also broke down and bought myself a jersey, which I am planning to wear tomorrow. Good times.

June 20, 2006 "You're still unemployed, right?"
First things first -
Today went a lot better than I thought it would. For most of class, I couldn't feel my hands and I was shaking. But when it came time for me to run the class, I felt calm and in control. We were a bit rushed for time and there wasn't as much participation as I would have liked, but I think it went well. It wasn't enough to convince me that "professor" is a title that I would enjoy, but I'm not so nervous about the next time I have to do this. Score one for grad school, I suppose.

I'm going to the Giants game tomorrow versus the Angels. C gave me his tickets again since I still don't have a job. The only job lead I had (referred to previously as the campaign) has fallen through as the candidate won. I'm excited for that candidate because he will be great in the office in which he was elected, but it means that in my spare time, I have to start looking for work again.

Prof C has wonderfully delegated me the task of grading today's quizzes, which have to be done by Thursday since the credit/no credit deadline is the end of the week. I guess it's only fair since I wrote some of the discussion questions and chose the questions for the quiz, but still. And somewhere in all that, I have to get the 400 pages of the next book read.

June 19, 2006 "Dear Skittles - you SUCK. That was NOT fun."
Didn't mean to drop off the face of the Earth. Just got totally caught up in life and mostly in the book I have to discuss tomorrow. I finally finished the afterword this morning. Now, I have to start reading the next book.

I went in to see Prof C, which was delightful as always. I can't believe this class is half over already. I'm just starting to get into my groove. I picked the quiz questions and ran my "lesson plan" by him - great fun. I hadn't plan to be there that long, but I ended up hanging out for like an hour and a half. I swear - it's a BlackHole!

I've been spending the evening baking and doing my laundry. I have the blueberry mini muffins done and I am working my way through the cinnamon strudel ones. I've made a playlist of background music for their group discussion time. Hopefully, that's enough to buy their love and encourage them to participate in the discussion. If not, I'm out of ideas.

June 15, 2006 myspace ate my brain
Today was entirely too much fun despite the fact that I am still behind in my reading and I have to lead the class on Tuesday. Prof C kept talking up my little experiment in teaching to the class, which just makes me feel even more nervous. I'm planning to buy their love with baked goods and cartoons - we'll see how well that goes. Actually, I still have to do my lesson plan this weekend, but I'm hoping to incorporate a lot of extra stuff so that I don't have to do a lot of actual, you know, talking ;)

Things are progressing on all three undecided fronts in my life, but I don't want to divulge more until I have papers signed, decisions made and paychecks in the bank. Any good vibes you want to send this way would be greatly appreciated.

I did a little shopping today to spend a gift card that I got for graduation. Except it seems that the gift card won't go as far as I would like at this particular store, so I'm saving it up for something really fabulous. There's a great dress that has been marked down, but not quite enough for me to justify it while I have nowhere to wear it and no paycheck - here's hoping it gets marked down again and soon!

one for the good column
Nothing special or particularly exciting happened today. I didn't really even leave the house. But that doesn't mean it wasn't a good day.
  • The Giants broke their four-game losing streak in a big way tonight, winning 11-4 over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

  • I had a good phone interview with the apartment's owner. Fingers crossed that everything else goes well and I have a new place to live next month.

  • I did the dishes....okay, ran the dishwasher, same difference.

  • Have started knitting a blue and yellow scarf to use up some of the extra yarn left from the blanket project. Not sure what I'm going to do with it yet, but it's nice to be making progress on a knitting project so quickly.

  • Registration fee for my car has gone down another $4 this year. Of course, I have to get it smogged again, but it's a small price to pay for cheap registration.

  • I am very close to finishing the book I am going to be leading discussion about next week. And I think Prof C is actually going to use some of my discussion questions - he he!

  • I might have a lead about job - but I don't want to jinx it, so that's all I'll say.
So, yeah, nothing terribly exciting. We're almost halfway through June already. How did that happen? Time just keeps ticking by whether I want it to or not. Tomorrow is already class #4 of 9 - wow!

June 13, 2006 kanye west and snotty rich kids
Prof C and I had a good time in class today - whether the students were having fun, I dunno, but as long as we are having fun, I feel like that's what's important. We gave them powerpoint, hip hop .mp3s and a video clip PLUS Hershey's minatures, just for participating in their group discussions. Why, yes, I *am* trying to buy their love before I have to lead the class discussion next week - why do you ask? ;)

I came home after stopping at the bank, made an attendance sheet, did some knitting and some reading before filling out an apartment app and figuring out how to use the scanner function on my printer. I got no sleep (read: 4 hours) last night and figured I would crash as soon as I got home, so I'm proud that I was actually productive. Not as productive as I should have been as I am still not done with my book, but I guess that's what tomorrow is for.

June 12, 2006 a saner person would have stayed inside until the sun came out
However, I think we have all established that sanity is not one of my greater attributes. So despite the typical San Francisco gray, foggy, windy, cold weather outside my window, I braved public transit with G to get a Moises Alou bobblehead and watch the Giants play baseball. The bobblehead is awesome; the same cannot be said of the game. I could have put up with the cold, biting wind blowing constantly on me from behind if the Giants would have won. And watching both Ray Durham and Moises hit homeruns was great. But watching the bullpen give up a grand slam to effectively end the game in the eighth just capped the disappointment. Sigh.

I am still reading, apartment hunting and waiting on campaign news. Every day I lose a little bit of hope about all three, but something has to break eventually, right?

Off to read and write discussion questions for the longest book of the semester. Remind me again why I decided to do this? All I want to do is crawl in bed and wake up when it's warm.

June 9, 2006 ˇSí, Se Puede!
Congrats to Team Ecuador for winning their opening game against Poland, 2-0! This was a huge win for Ecuador and a devastating loss for Poland! This puts Ecuador in first place with Germany - who thought that would happen! Team E plays Costa Rica, who was beaten by Germany today, on Thursday to stay alive for the next round. Poland will face Germany the day before.

  1. Dear weather, I could do without the fog and the wind, but I'm not complaining. I know it could be a lot worse at this time of year.
  2. The theme of my calendar is view from the porch.
  3. I drink only with other people. Strawberry margaritas with R tonight, baby!
  4. If I had a superpower, it would be flying to cut down on my commute.
  5. My very favorite gemstone is amythest or rose quartz
  6. This weekend I will be reading for class, writing discussion questions, looking for jobs and an apartment. Wanna switch lives?

unbroke my heart
Well, the Giants just won against the Pirates, 5-4! It was mostly dumb luck and horrible errors by the Pirates, but a W is a W, especially after yesterday's awful loss. Definitely a nice cap to the evening!

Class went well today. I screwed up the PowerPoint a bit, but Prof C's just awesome and totally vamped while I fixed it. I got to include a West Wing clip in the lecture as well - I think I was more amused than the class, but I guess that's what counts ;)

Drove past two potential apartment open houses and you couldn't have paid me to live there. Went past a third that is scheduled for Saturday and I really like the area. I hope the inside is as great because I would love for this little apartment search to be OVER.

Campaign stuff is still up in the air and we might not know anything until Monday. Good thing there's World Cup soccer to distract me over the weekend. Ecuador plays Poland at 11:55am - whoohoo!

June 8, 2006 dished out disappointment
Well, the Giants let me down today and since I was at the game, it was doubly heartbreaking.

I didn't pick a lot of winners yesterday and the one race that was destined to be a runoff ended up not. So that changes the job landscape for me a little bit, but I'm trying to be optimistic that the right position is out there for me.

I've got a 200-page book to read tonight for my class tomorrow and I am really not in the mood. But a TA's gotta do what a TA's gotta do.

June 6, 2006 first day of school (on the other side of the table)
Today was my first day of TAing and it was fabulous! Of course, Prof C did most of the talking, but it was still fun. After class, students came up to ask me questions and I was just totally in control, explaining things and giving them advice. I know that every day won't be like that (especially the days when I'm doing the talking), but it was still a nice way to start this new experience.

I'm going to a Giants game tomorrow with D (thank to C!) - I'm so excited! It's my first game of the season at PacBell. I was going to go on Sunday (and I'm still going to try to get tickets) to get the M. Alou bobblehead, but I'll never say 'no' to free tickets! So even though I haven't been to a game all season, I'm going to two in a week. He he!

It's also primary day here in California, so if you haven't voted, you've still got 3 hours to get to the polls and cast your vote! Turnout is going to be small, so you can really impact the outcome just by showing up ;)

June 4, 2006 "Approach all areas of life with a bold enthusiasm." -fortune cookie
I actually slept in today! The days that I have wanted to sleep later lately seem to be the ones that I wake up at 8am and can't get back to sleep. I slept till about 11am today and didn't feel guilty about it at all.

I've been cleaning up around here. My desk is now much more organized and ready for use again. I'm doing laundry so that I actually have something to wear when I start my TAing this week. One load of dishes is done in the dishwasher and another is ready to go. I'm picking up all the odds and ends that have been strewn around my apartment since Mom and I cleaned a week and a half ago. There's still a lot to be done, but it feels better to be in an organized place.

I have really enjoyed my little break between semesters. I feel rejuvenated and ready to go again instead of worn out. I'm getting nervous about this class, but I think it will be good experience. Whether or not I'm any good at the teaching thing, I just want to have a blast with Prof C in his last class at State before he goes to the Dark Side of private university in the City. Like Ben & Jerry's motto: If it's not fun, why do it?

sunburned but smiling
Today was such an easy Saturday, the kind I hope to have more of now that school is finished. I looked at apartments, met up with K and ran some errands. The sun was shining and my shoulders got sunburned, which is actually kinda cool for me. I also now have a flip-flop tan - whoohoo! Tomorrow I have finish the blanket, write a note, do laundry and read a book. Good thing there's nothing to watch on television ;)

June 2, 2006 foggy day in the City
Yes, it seems that summer has arrived with a vengenance. Time to get the sweaters and socks back out for the duration. The sun was out when I went to lunch, but by the time I got back, the cold, thick fog was blowing over the hill. I'm trying to hold out on turning on the heat, but I may not last that long.

I was introduced to the joys of Benihana this afternoon. K and B had invited me out to lunch and it was fabulous! I think teriyaki is one of my favorite flavors, so this was a thin slice of heaven for me. The waitress even took polaroids of us since K had told her we were graduates. You'd think that would wear off after a week, but it hasn't - I love it!

I opened a new bank account here in the City, finally. I don't have a paycheck coming to me yet, but when I do, I figured it would be better to deposit it myself than to send it back to my parents for deposit in my credit union account. It was surprisingly easy and I felt very grown up. I guess I am one now - a grown up, that is. Scary thought.

My ECC prof finally posted my grade, so I now have all my grades for spring posted:

Early Christian Church
A-
Spring Semester GPA
3.77
Proseminar
B+
History Cumulative GPA
3.40
Internship
A
PoliSci Cumulative GPA
3.84
Internship Seminar

I kick so much ass! I'm a little shocked at how high my PoliSci GPA is, but I guess I've really found my forte in that field. Of course, it probably would have been better to find that out before I graduated, but I guess that's what grad school is for. Ha!

June 1, 2006 starting a new life (a lot like the old one)
Happy Birthday, KB!

He's off having a fabulous time in Vegas - I'm so jealous! I have got to start getting a paycheck, so I can do fun things like go to Vegas. It's been far too long since I've enjoyed the wonders of gambling and drinking at the same time. He tells me that the Camel Races are gone, but there's a lot of new stuff to see.

I didn't get to the bank today, but I did start my graduation thank you notes. I also started getting my apartment back in order - throwing away food from the fridge, etc. I'm having lunch out for the next couple of days, so I figure it's time to get rid of some of the leftovers.

I have uploaded the graduation photos to Flickr. If you want to see all the photos, GO HERE. You need a Flickr account (and I need to add you as a friend) to see them at the Flickr site (or see the bigger versions of the ones posted below).

I guess these thank you notes are not going to write themselves, so I need to get back to them. I've got a book to read and discussion questions to write tomorrow (hopefully!), so that I'm ready to read the other three books when I get them on Monday afternoon. Whew! Lots to do - back to work!
