August 30, 2005 note to my neighbor practising the bagpipes
Please stop. Please. I'm begging you. I like "Amazing Grace" as much as the next person, but I just can't take it anymore.

August 29, 2005 accomplished
I didn't get up as early as I would have liked, but I got up early than yesterday, so I feel pretty good about that. I started cleaning up my room, which had become a disaster in my attempt to put everything away before school started.
I took a break and dashed off to the UPS store to drop off the shoes I'm returning. I came home and commenced putting togther one of my new bookcases. It was relatively easy and I think I'll tackle the other one after classes tomorrow.
I meant to do laundry while I was putting the bookcases together, but I forgot. I guess I'll be dressing up for class tomorrow since I have no school clothes left. Sigh.
Enough procrastinating. I've got reading for tomorrow to do. I would just skip out, but Prof C wrote one of the things I have to read, so he'll know if I'm just BSing ;)

August 26, 2005 There's nothing better...
than talking on the phone to my favorite cousin, eating hot from the oven pizza with Redskins football on my television set. And they are currently winning! (with 3:00 to go in the 4th quarter!!)

August 25, 2005 life. is. good.
The cable has been here and I now have service again. Apparently someone moved out this summer and they disconnected me instead of them. Fabulous.
The second first day of school went much better than I thought it would. I think I will like this semester's TTh days better than last semester. Of course, nothing compares with the awesomeness of MW, but hey, everyday can't be a blue ribbon day, right?
I tried on all three pairs of shoes I ordered from Zappos and they are all too big. Sigh. Must return and get smaller sizes. I would really like to get started on this whole dress alteration thing, but I can't do that until I get shoes.
I've actually got homework to do, even though it's the first week of school, so I guess I better get to it. I want to start off on the right foot with Dr E since he's going to do me a favor later in the semester.

August 24, 2005 Best. First. Day. EVER.
I had such a blast today that it really didn't even feel like school. Prof C was back and better than ever and I think I'm totally going to rock his class. I got an A- last semester, so this time, I am going for the A! D and I ended up hanging out in his office for a bit this afternoon during my break, catching up on all of our summer activities.
My other classes went great and I'm actually looking forward to the other two as well. None of the classes require an really intensive research paper (well, maybe Prof C's, but it'll be fun research), so all good there. I have a teeny scheduling conflict that I'm hoping to get resolved, but otherwise, it will totally ruin everything. I don't want to say anything for fear of jinxing it, but I'm sure you guys know what I'm talking about.
The shoes I ordered for Kristin's wedding arrived today, way ahead of schedule. I'm wearing black heels around the house this evening, trying to decide which ones will work best. I'll keep you posted!

August 22, 2005 so happy!
Congratulations Erin & Kenny on your engagement! Life's getting pretty exciting around here. If my friends would like to stop getting married and having babies, that would be okay with me ;)

August 21, 2005 nothing
I decided to follow Adam's example and do nothing today. I took Mom to the airport early this morning and then went back to bed. I've spent the day either sleeping or watching my new Lois & Clark DVD. I made my favorite TV dinner and I've been working on a new project. I can't believe that tomorrow's Monday and I've only got two days until school starts!

August 20, 2005 Life back to normal ;)
We endured crazy traffic in the middle of the afternoon to get to IKEA. I knew exactly what I wanted, so after writing down the self-pickup shelving numbers, Mom and I went downstairs to pick them up. I picked up the extra shelves for my existing bookcases and then pushed the cart all the way to the end of the store to find that they were out of the bookcase I wanted in the birch veneer. Crap. So, leaving the cart where it was (sorry, IKEA person who has to restock those two shelves), we left. We drove down to the other area IKEA that, luckily, had the two shelving units I wanted AND the extra shelves! Yay for IKEA!
From there it was time to replace my poor abused printer. It was in the process of dying before I left, but held out for finals. However, as the new semester starts, I thought it best to get a new one. I got a great deal on it at Costco as well as two more seasons of XF DVDs and the new Sophie Kinsella book.
I also went grocery shopping and Mom did some laundry so she had clothes to wear. Tomorrow is more shopping and finally putting my apartment back together again. Yay!

August 19, 2005 My hotel has a casino
and other adventures from the road The best hotel we stayed at was, hands down, the Holiday Inn Express in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. It had a two-story lobby, decked out like a mountaind lodge and spacious rooms with great cherry furnishings. It was very insulated and my room had a great view of the mountains. The worst hotel was the $72-a-night Holiday Inn in Salt Lake City, though it was nowhere near the Heart-O-Chicago level. It rained every day except Sunday and yesterday. Some days it was blinding, unrelenting rain; some days just a sprinkle would fall. Arches National Park is just as beautiful as I remember it and I will always remember to charge the batteries on my camera before hiking to the scenic view. The best part of any journey is returning home - needing a vacation from your vacation. Though mine was not a vacation, it was lovely and fun all the same. Only 5 days until classes start again!

August 14, 2005 Halfway there!
We have arrived in Denver, CO and are just chilling out in our great hotel room until it's time to go up and see Anna in Boulder. Despite driving, blinding rain in Missouri and parts of Kansas, it has been a great trip! There's been a rock slide west of Denver, so tomorrow's itinerary might be a bit changed, but for now, we're completely on schedule.
Spent Friday night and yesterday morning with KB and KB's girlfriend (henceforth known as KBG). We had dinner at Outback on Friday night, which was much appreciated since driving across Missouri was hellish. On Saturday morning we had breakfast at a local restaurant and headed over to Union Station to check out the 9/11 exhibit. It was very powerful as I knew it would be. It was a bit strange to see it with KB because he is the only other person in the universe that knows exactly how my day went on 9/11 since he was there. After that, we enjoyed the children's science museum, which was awesome! Then it was time to leave and head on.
I can't wait to see Anna and I'm ready to get back home again. Four more days!

August 11, 2005 say goodnight, not goodbye
It's been a great summer and I'm sorry to see it end! I'm glad I got to see most of you back home at least for a few moments. Those I missed, I hope we can get together when I'm back in the fall.
I learned a lot this summer - about politics and about myself. I experienced so much and yet I know there is so much more I wish I could have done. I'll be back in October for Kristin's wedding.
Follow the return trip on the MoBlog and I'll see you on the flip side ;)

August 9, 2005 tell the truth
So, Peter Jennings is gone. Though he had left the airwaves a few months ago, I was hoping that he would return, bringing me the news in a forthright and honest way. His voice was soothing and lilting and I never felt that he was talking down to us as he explained the events of the day.
This past year, I have lost all three familiar faces that brought me the news in times of happiness and in times of crisis. It's no secret that Tom Brokaw was my #1 guy, but Peter Jennings was on deck. My generation didn't have Walter Cronkite, but we had Tom and Dan and Peter. With these three men off the airwaves, I don't know where to turn to find the truth.

August 5, 2005 One. More. Day!
This has been a fabulous week with the last two days topping the list of great days of the summer. I've been taken out to lunch twice this week and just had so much fun. Recess is awesome!
Tomorrow is my last day at my internship and then it's back to Cali for me. This is my last weekend in town, so if we haven't seen each other, I hope we will get something planned soon.
Despite all my whining about hours and heat and hardwork, it's been a blast being back here for the summer. I'm excited to go back to school, though, which will be happening before I know it.
Okay, enough stalling. Must finish thank you notes!

August 3, 2005 Every election is special!
Since I got home, I've been glued to the results of the OH-02 special election. Okay, I've been glued to them all day really. And I wouldn't have believed it if I weren't seeing it with my own eyes. As of right now: 662 precincts of 753 reporting JEAN SCHMIDT 49,681 50% PAUL HACKETT 48,811 50%
With less than 100 precincts left to report, the underdog who couldn't win in this 64% Bush district is only losing by 870 votes. Even if he doesn't win, this showing is way better than I ever dreamed. Go Paul - do your thing!

August 1, 2005 a "Sonny" day at the beach and other stories
Kimber and I went to Ocean City yesterday and though we didn't get to lay out at all due to the rain and the clouds, we still had a great time. We saw "Wedding Crashers" which is a hysterical movie and I'm going to have to see it again to catch all the jokes I missed while laughing so hard. But the best part of the night was our waiter with multiple personalities at dinner. It's hard to describe, but I think the receipt can encapsulate the experience. He wrote "Thanks girls!" on the top (with the "s" of Girls below the rest because he couldn't fit it on the top) and a heart around the total. It was unreal!
In the so crazy, it has to be true category. This morning, right before my dad called to wake me up for church, I had a dream about Chris W. He wanted me to sit with him at lunch or something - the details are hazy, but it was clearly him. Then who do I see at church? Chris W! His mom had suggested that he come (Ken's doing a sermon series on families that is phenomenal), so he was there. Totally random, but a great surprise nonetheless.
I just got back from dinner with Eugenia. She and I ended up dissecting HP6 for like an hour and a half, but we both came to the conclusion that it's really just half a book and we can't wait for HP7 to how she wraps it all up.
I'm starting my last week of my internship tomorrow. It doesn't feel like it's been two months and yet it feels like it's been a year and I'm so ready to go back to SF and my other life there. Hopefully, I can see everyone I haven't yet seen before that happens, though. I'm so sorry I've been unavailable - if/when I come back here for good, I hope to have much better hours, so that I don't need to have a scheduler ;)
