July 30, 2005 it's recess, baby!
Congress went into recess today and so did my office! It was like the last day of school, complete with special election haiku poetry and intern superlatives. Four of our comrades left today, leaving us with only eleven going into next week. I've only got one week to go before I, too, turn into a pumpkin.
I'm going to the beach tomorrow and I can't tell you how excited I am! I have been dying to go to the beach since I came back east. I haven't been to Ocean City since we went to that bell festival in 1996! A lot has happened in those 9 years - it's funny to think about how naive and silly we really were ;)

July 29, 2005 iPod update
I have now updated my iPod with enough songs that I could listen for 24 hours without hearing a song repeated. Insane, when you consider that I'm only using 1/20 of its memory.

July 28, 2005 remind me not to tempt fate next time
Woke with the blinding, pounding, vertigo-inducing vileness that is the migraine. After trying to stumble to the bathroom and shower, I discovered that standing up right for any amount of time just wasn't in the cards for me. I e-mailed into work and then passed out for the next eight hours. I have now just woken up and while feeling slightly better, I'm still not my usual self. Have taken another dose of medication and praying that I don't throw up before it dissolves and enters my bloodstream.

golden sheen
Well, I finally got home about half an hour ago. The debate is still going on on the Floor and votes are expected to proceed into the night. Luckily for me, I don't have to stay at the office to watch. I've been flipping back and forth between real TV and CSPAN, but I don't expect the vote to happen while I'm still awake. Whatever will be will be at this point.
Overall it was a good day which means tomorrow is not going to be a good day, but I guess thems the breaks!

July 27, 2005 I burned my finger on a taco and other Tuesday tales
Today was another long day full of hurry-up-and-wait. At least I didn't have to go outside. Tomorrow I will not be so lucky. Having just finished dinner after arriving home a half hour ago, it is sadly time for bed. Perhaps tomorrow will be more interesting.

July 26, 2005 the shortest longest day ever!
Just got home from Chris & Tyne's baby shower. I'm glad I went, if even for a short time. Still seems a bit strange that in two and a half weeks (give or take), he's going to be a dad. We're all grown up now. Sniff!
Today was the longest day and yet it went by so fast! Before I knew it, it was time for the afternoon meeting on the Hill and then it was back to work on my project. I could have kept working this evening, if it wasn't for the baby shower. This week is going to be so crazy until recess. One day down, four (hopefully!) to go!

July 24, 2005 weekend warrior
As Kristin so lovingly reminded me, I haven't been updating this as well as I should have, so I'm taking the time today to correct that.
Yesterday, I spent the afternoon at Home Depot, helping my mom pick out paint for the den and then it was party time. I stopped by Kristin & Rich's for their housewarming, where I ran into people from high school I hadn't seen in a while as well as Adam (and Emily) and Erin (and Kenny).
Then I had to head to Alexandria for Anna's going away party. We had snacks at Eugenia's and then headed to Casablanca for music and bellydancing.
The Girls! I'm not so much into the bellydancing, like the rest of the "cult" (a term I use lovingly), but it was still fun. Hopefully, it won't be the last time I see Anna before she takes off for grad school.
I got to see Dana and Jenni at church this morning, which was awesome. I've missed Jenni and we had a good talk for the few minutes we had. From church, I went to the mall to feel bad about myself, i.e. try on bathing suits. Unfortunately, I waited too long into the summer to shop and I couldn't find anything to even try on, much less hate the way it looks on my body. Sigh.
Ken really got to me with the sermon, so I will be attending the M's baby shower tomorrow. I even bought a present. Look at me - I'm growing. Off to watch Simpsons before bed.

July 23, 2005 Hank!
Can I just say that I want a crowd full of people to cheer me on every day ala that Starbucks commercial? Cracks me up every time!
I actually had a good week this week. I had lunch with Congresswoman Bean, saw Sen. Hillary Clinton and Rep. John Lewis speak and went to a Nationals game with the folks from work. Only two weeks of my internship left - where has the summer gone?
I finally finished Harry Potter 6 on Wednesday evening. In a week, I read 1522 pages (HP5 & HP6) - that's so unusual for me!
I signed up for classes today and I got all the ones I wanted, with no problems. I've got 3 old professors and two new ones, though one was an advisor of mine. I'm excited to go back to class next month.
But before that, I've got a full weekend planned before I head back to a LOOONG week of work before August recess.

July 17, 2005 Chi-town
I have arrived home from my whirlwind weekend in Chicago, no real worse for wear. Much thanks to Katie for lending me her lovely condo and to Jen for being my tour guide/ride to/from the airport. I didn't get as far as I would have liked, but it was an experience I won't soon forget. Thank you to everyone who supported me in any way. It means a lot.
I have finally finished Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, so my first order of business upon leaving the airport was to purchase HP6. I don't think I'll be finishing it tonight like I had hoped, but I will try to read as much as possible before work tomorrow.

July 11, 2005 like an oven!
Man, it was muggy outside today! I mean, it's probably like that every day, but since I rarely leave the office in the middle of the day, I don't notice it. But today, I had to walk to a meeting and I was just so sweaty! I wasn't even wearing the jacket of my pant suit at the time. The lobby of my office building is always super cool and I wished I could have hung out down there all afternoon.
Aunt Suzy and Uncle Mark should have touched down by now. I'll be going over to Grandma and Grandpa's later tonight to say hi since I'm not going to be around this weekend.
I got the keys to Katie's condo today, so I truly have a place to stay in Chicago. She hadn't had a chance to separate the two sets yet, so there is just this huge ring of keys - I have to go through them all to figure out which one opens her home. Should be fun! I'm actually starting to get excited about the event and the trip. Even though I don't know anyone, I feel like it's going to be really meaningful. (And I get to hang out with Jen all weekend, which will be super cool, too!!)

July 10, 2005 dinner party
I think the dinner party went well tonight. I made Aunt Denise's Chicken with sides of mashed potatos and corn. Caryn brought dessert, Adam and Emily brought salad, Tommy & Steph brough a great cous cous dish and Olen brought some sparkling red wine. Conversation flowed for the most part and no one seemed visibly ill from my cooking, so I shall count this as a success. It was really awesome to see everyone, especially Olen, who drove up from Richmond. It's probably the only time I'll hang out with most of them. Sad, but true.
I can't believe I'm still awake at this point, but I'm trying to get as much work done as possible while I am awake.

July 8, 2005 it's all about the hair
Because I got to come in 90 minutes later today, I had a chance to dry my hair. I had forgotten what a pain in ass wearing my "long" hair down really is. I think that after Kristin's wedding, I'm going to get it all chopped off again.
Eugenia and I were talking on IM today about that and she suggested layers. I've always had a phobia about layers, but after a bit of talking, I think that's what I'm going to do.
Anyone have any suggestions/photos that I can take to my stylist in a few months?

July 7, 2005 sweetness
There's nothing I could say about what happened in London before that hasn't already been said much more eloquently by someone else, so I'll simply say that my prayers are with the families. All but one of "my" people have been accounted for and for that, I am grateful.
Because of today's events, work was incredibly slow. We couldn't do what we had scheduled to do, so we did a lot of nothing. I got a smiley face cookie from Firehook Bakery which was uber-yummy! I got my insurance doctors changed, so I finally have doctors near my house which means I can actually go to the doctor or dentist if I want to. Go figure. I got to leave at 6:15 and I don't have to be back until 8:30 tomorrow! Score!
I ordered pizza from the car, so it should be here any minute. Didn't want to repeat last night's mistake ;)

July 6, 2005 crazy day
Mom and Daddy left for my apartment in SF today, so I'm living my bachelorette life again. I'm too lazy to call for pizza or pick up Chinese at this point, so I guess I will be scavenging in the fridge for dinner.
Today was a mad house at work, but I made it through. Whoohoo!

July 5, 2005 Happy Fourth!
I got a taste of what regular people do during the summer as the parents and I ventured to the National Zoo for the day. I took a ton of pictures, but I'm too lazy to deal with them tonight. I think I got a good tan today. At least I have more color than I did yesterday. I'd hate to go back west as pale as I came here!
For the second year running, I've watched fireworks on television and I have to say, I really enjoy it. All the pretty (plus music) without the awful noise.
I'm not looking forward to going back to work tomorrow, but until the next door neighbors finish their own private fireworks display, I guess I'm not going to get any sleep.

July 4, 2005 "I find that duck's opinions of me are very much influenced over whether or not I have bread." -Mitch Hedberg
After I got home from tea at Anna's house, I decided to feed the ducks at the lake behind my house. There were two groups of ducks within a few yards of each other. They really seemed to enjoy the hamburger buns we were tossing out. After completing the circuit of the lake, Mom and I went back to the most populous spot to finish off the bag. I had an inner circle of about 8 ducks that were in a semi-circle about a foot away from me and Mom took care of the ones that were further way. There was one that would have eaten from my hand if his neck was long enough. Herbert (that's what I named him) came out of the water to stand next to me. Never pushy, he wait his turn patiently, enjoying the morsels I doled out.
I love feeding the ducks - it makes me feel popular. But like Mitch Hedberg, I know they are only in it for the bread.

July 1, 2005 new lease on life
Even with Sandra's little announcement, it was still a light day for me at work. While most of the other departments left the office between 3 and 3:30, I didn't leave until 4:25. That's still about 2-2.5 hours than usual and it felt wonderful. I didn't even care about rush hour traffic or crowded trains (though the lady next to me who decided that Metro was the appropriate place to feed her child baby food made me quite tense). When I got home, my parents and I walked around the lake behind our house and then had hamburgers. I feel so accomplished and energetic even though I've been until since 5:05am.
I'm going to enjoy the hell out of this 3-day weekend!

Is it recess yet?
I was 15 minutes late to work today and I still managed to clock 12.5 hours on the job. Whew! Hopefully, the House will finish voting tonight and tomorrow will be a relatively light day so we can concentrate on the big stuff that's coming.
I am *so* looking forward to the 3-day weekend that's coming. I'm not going to the beach like I had hoped, but I do think I'll be getting some sun at some point. I am just way too pale!
