Damn Santa Anas!
Ah, the joy of an empty inbox! All my e-mails have been answered, printed or otherwise discarded. At least that feels accomplished.
KB and I cleaned the balcony today. I'm hoping to get some furniture and a little rug to put out there and make it really some place to sit and do things. I never want to go out there cause it's dirty and there's no view, etc. But maybe with some nice things...chairs, a table, whatnot, I can have my nook for writing, paying bills and reading a book. We'll see.
I had my first horseback riding lesson yesterday. I don't really like the teacher, but I've paid for the class and I won't get a refund if I don't go back, so such is life. He kept telling us that it's so easy to do everything. He's 84 years old and has been riding for over 60 years, so I'm sure to him, it's very easy. But to someone who's never done this before, we need a little more reassurance and direction. Hopefully, things will improve and I'll pick it up as I go along. I learned to mount and dismount, indicate a walk and both left and right turns. My horse's name was Bret. He was a dirty white color and seem to respond to me slightly. We'll see how it continues.
I'm not being directly affected by the fires, though while I was at the ranch for my lesson, the sky got really black over the mountain behind us and we were worried about it. Turns out it was just smoke and ash from the fire in Simi Valley, so not worry. The air is thick and smells like someone is barbecuing all the time. It's hard to breathe sometimes and I'm glad I don't have asthma. There's a thin layer of ash and soot covering most everything, but that's the extent of my worries with it. Of course add the freeway closures due to the fires to the MTA strike and the grocery strike, and LA is a pretty bleak place to live.

October 23, 2003 Random musings
I'm still here at work and bored, so I shall post my random musings until time to go.
I talked to Chris on Tuesday after I called him while sitting in traffic trying to pick up my dry cleaning. We talked for about 20 minutes...well, he talked and I laughed in the appropriate places. Hopefully, I'll get to see him on one of my whirlwind trips home. I'll be making 3 before the end of the year.
I bought a bunch of cards on Tuesday night as well. I want to be like that lady in the Hallmark commercial with a card for every occaision. KB teases me, but I never have to freak out about missing someone's birthday or a baby or whatever.
KB made dinner last night on the grill and it was so fabulous! Teriakyi chicken with garlic mashed potatoes. Way better than anything I could put together. He's making dinner again tonight -- I think I'll keep him ;)
Well, the girls and I have started planning for Vegas...I'm definitely excited! I'll have to dash in and dash out because I have no vacation time, but it'll be worth it. I think we need time to just be away from church and all, but still get to see each other and enjoy each other as people. Chris, Olen and I had such a great time this summer and I'm sure a good time will be had by all in December as well.
Oh and another thing to add to my Receptionist bitch -- I have no idea how long someone is going to be on the phone. I have a board with little red lights that light up when someone is using their line or has put on their DND button. That's as far as my knowledge goes. I can't see anyone. I can't slip anyone a note. I can't tap anyone on the shoulder or yell to them. I don't know how long they will be in the meeting and I can't go into the meeting to tell them you are on the phone because then I can't answer the phone. Why do people not understand that? Is it an LA thing or just a universal American thing? Guess what, you are not as important as you think you are. Get. Over. It.

October 17, 2003 The Joys of Being a Receptionist
Some days I hate my job. Not because of the people (although there is one lady who grates on my nerves) or my boss or even the job itself, but the stupidity and rudeness of the callers. Just some hints and rants:
If someone is on their phone, I will tell you. When I put you through to their extension, it means that I think they are in the office and not on their phone. I am not deliberately trying to screw you or mess with you.
If someone is at lunch, there is nothing I can do to bring them back. Sometimes you're just going to have to take their voice mail or call back later. My office goes to lunch all at one time, so there is no one around in a supervisory position most of the time during that time
If you left a voice mail for someone and they didn't call you back that isn't my fault, so stop taking it out on me!
If I page someone and they don't answer the page, again, that isn't my fault! Take it up with them if you ever get them on the phone
And another thing, if one more person tells me we're out of cups I'm going to scream! I'm perfectly aware of it. In fact, I ordered them yesterday during our weekly Office Depot order and they should be arriving today. I've known that we were getting low on cups since Tuesday, which is suprising because we got 250 in on Friday. We only order Office Depot once a week, so we had to wait until yesterday to order. How this office can go through 250 cups and 50 reams of paper in one week is beyond me -- something tells me people are hording!
I'm heartsick over the Cubs and the Sox, but I guess I don't have to watch the World Series now. ::sigh::
I am excited however about this weekend's trip to Laguna Beach. I've never been and I'm happy to be getting the hell out of LA for the weekend. Between the grocery workers strike, the MTA strike and the possible strike of the Sheriff's Department, it hasn't been a good week to live here. I've got the wanderlust, but for now, Laguna will have to do. ::sigh::

October 15, 2003 Costco
So, I went to Costco last night in the Marina (no matter what the website says, the Culver City one is in the Marina) and after being acosted by the strikers, KB and I sought refuge in the big screen TV section. We joined the few people watching the Cubs/Marlins game. The score was 3-0 Cubs. KB decided he was hungry and we went out to the "cafe" for some dinner. KB had a slice of pizza and a hot dog and I had a berry smoothee. Why do you care? I'm trying to give a frame of reference for how long we were outside.
We came back in the store and walked past the TV section on our way to do some serious shopping. Imagine my surprise to see the score of 8-3 in the bottom of the 8th! Man oh man!
If the Cubs lose this one after coming so far, I don't know what I'm going to do, but it's going to be bad. My grandpa is the biggest Cubs fan and I would love for him to see the Cubs in the World series and perhaps even win. There's no way they should have gone to a game 7 and now I'm just too nervous!
On another note, I'm so tired of the strike already. I never knew how much I liked going to the grocery store until I couldn't go anymore. Danielle told me to go to Trader Joe's, but it's just not the same and the nearest Gelson's is in Century City :( Hopefully, this will end soon, but I don't forsee that it will.
I gotta get out of the city for the weekend. Any suggestions?

October 14, 2003
Well, I've gotten the okay to come for Christmas, though it will be an abbreviated stay compared to previous years. Hopefully I will have a chance to relax some (ha!) and see everyone who needs to be seen. Now, I've just gotta find a plane ticket. The cheapest I've been able to find is $405. Any travel deal websites I should know about? I'll be coming in on the red eye Christmas Eve and out on that Sunday afternoon. Ladies are we still on for Vegas over New Year's? I'm already getting e-mails from the hotels about their special deals.
I got to talk to Julie last night cause she just randomly called me on her way home from work. It was really cool. I think those are the best conversations, when it's just random and not forced. I guess the ball's in my court for the next one.

October 8, 2003 Election of a Lifetime
About 8 months ago, KB and I were walking in Old Pasadena when a Dirty Hippie came up to us with a clipboard. As with most people, who approach me on the street, I started to shake my head and tell him that I didn't want any of whatever it was he wanted to sell me. He asked,"Do you want to see Gray Davis out of office?" My answer was a resounding "You bet!" I signed the petition on his clipboard and never thought about it again.
A couple weeks later, I started hearing about this recall. That the Dirty Hippie wasn't just crazy...there was really a movement afoot to get Gray Davis out of office and it was gaining momentum. And now, today, it has happened. The man who lost a $10 billion surplus and plunged us $38 billion in debt is now packing his bags to leave the governor's mansion. We set a precedent today -- do your job well because you work for us, Mr. Governor, not the other way around.
Am I happy about Arnold? Of course not. But today, millions of Californians made their voices heard. This election rivaled a Presidential election in terms of turnout second only to the election in 1964. As usual, I was there, though I didn't get my "I Voted" sticker cause my polling place was run like a $2 whore house (TM KB), but that's another story.

DREAM: Caryn's Wedding
Weird Dream Alert:
It's the day of Caryn's wedding and we are gathering at Caryn's parents' house, 'cept it looks more like the Dana family home than the Fraim house. I am trying to decide what to wear to the church. I can feel Caryn around me, but I never see her. Then we are at St. Matthew's in the vocal choir room and the whole lot of us is there. Again I am trying to decide what to wear before we go to the "real" church. The door to the choir room is open and I am trying to change clothes. All the people in the room don't bother me, but apparently, the people in the hallway bothered me. Olen was there and he refused to close the door. I screamed at him and everyone laughed. Then I was in the bathroom across from the vocal choir room and Alan Kuckleman was there. I don't know why. Then I found out I was a bridesmaid and would have to change clothes again.
Yeah, I think I need a dream book for that one cause it's totally fucked up!

October 7, 2003
I have strapped on my gloves and am now preparing to blog from THE CUBE. It's more of an L-shaped office than a cube and it has less privacy than a cube, with the window in the front and the wall of in boxes to my right, but THE CUBE sounds properly ominous, so THE CUBE is how it shall be known from now on. All copyright and trademark rights belonging to Katie.
I realized I haven't blogged about my new job yet, so I thought while I'm waiting for the phone to ring, I shall do it. Everyone is super nice and a few people have really gone out of their way to get to know me and let me get to know them. I'm still trying to sort out names and faces, since I don't have the interaction up here in the CUBE that I did at HPR. My boss is fabulous as is the GM, who is a riot, so I forsee a long future here. As a receptionist, I don't have a lot to do, but they keep trying to find things for me to do, so I don't have to sit here like a bump on a log, staring at the clock, willing it to go by.
Do I still miss HPR? Sure. Would I go back there? Probably not. As much as I miss the people, I don't miss the boss (duh!) or the work. I like being challenged and having my potential recognized, things that were not and most likely would not happen at HPR.
All in all, I'm happy and I don't want to be anywhere else.
