Wow, I'm gonna be a traveling gal this month! This weekend is Target: Las Vegas and next weekend, I just bought a plane ticket for Phoenix to visit my cousin (who is like my sister) and her husband. Then I'm looking at coming back East for Easter, so I'll be gone that weekend too. I can't go anywhere the next weekend cause I'm planning on working at the Daytime Emmy's Blue Ribbon Panel again this year. Man, for a girl with no social life, I'm sure gonna be crazy busy in April!

Well, I just found out from my dad that he talked with Chris's mom and his ship has been turned around. So Chris is back in the thick of things and he will not be coming home as we all previously thought. God be with you, Chris!

Just an interesting conversation between my mom and I that I want to save for posterity:

Jenn: Sam said something to me the other day that although logical, really made me feel good. She said to remember that God never closes a door without opening a window.

Mom: But you have to remember to turn around a see the window.

Jenn: Right. You have to notice the draft instead of saying "Damn it's cold in here!"

Wow, welcome back to my life! The power went off about 6:30 from the high winds. It came back on sometime between 7pm and 9pm and then went off again while I was in the middle of reseting my clocks. I don't think you want a transcript of what I said, but it wasn't pretty! I went to sleep about 10:30 cause there really wasn't anything else to do. I think that the power came back on around 1am, so I reset the clock and turned on my alarm. It was a crazy night, but at least it's over. I never realized the lack of things to do in my apartment when the power goes out and I only have a flashlight, three candles and a taplight.

March 26, 2003 "Who loves ya baby?!"
I had the most hellious morning. I got to work late cause of an awful accident on 10E this morning. Then I find out that Danielle hasn't been able to do the upgrade, so the computers are all fucked up. The boys and everyone else had to get off the system for what turned out to be the whole day while Danielle redid the backup and installed the upgrade. We'll see what that's like in the morning.

We started a new project yesterday and so when I gave the info to Chris, I thought that was the end of it. But Chris comes storming into the office saying that Scott gave Sara all the POs numbers and she should research it. 'Cept there's no place to research it, but Chris is long gone on his little vacation by now. Michael and Monty come in later to try to create a new system for getting POs. The boys will have to get the ones for features and television and I will be in charge of those for commercials, music videos and photographers. Sounds easy enough, but of course there will be problems. Michael finally figured out a system that I have the pleasure of implementing on Monday and we'll see how it works. But I'm still more responsible for this PO crap than I ought to be. The system is to do the print outs and give them to Michael who will give them to Chris who will give them to the boys which is supposed to keep the boys off our backs. Michael wants to protect us. But unfortunately Michael won't be there when Chris gets the report or half the days that I'll be getting bitched out, so where's my protection?!

The only good part about the whole day was Nate coming into the office everytime he got a PO, saying, "Who loves ya baby?!"

This is the part of my day where I hate Adam because he can buy gas for $1.29. Even using the super cool http://www.losangelesgasprices.com, the cheapest gas in LA is $1.99 and that's in Pomona, which is fucking far from my house and work. The cheapest I've seen around here is $2.09 and by my house, I've got between $2.18 and $2.33 for regular stupid gas. Grrr!!!

Although we've come to the End Of The Road
Still I can't let you go
It's unnatural, you belong to me, I belong to you
Come to the End of the Road
Still I can't let you go
It's unnatural, you belong to me, I belong to you
"End of the Road" by Boyz II Men

So I was watching my tape of the Different World series finale (yeah, you can make fun of that later) and even though I've seen it a million times, I started thinking about this song when Whitley starts singing it and Dwayne and Whitley start to say goodbye to their friends. This song was the last one played at prom oh so many years ago (okay, just 4, but it feels like a lifetime ago). I was teary and couldn't really even move after the song finished and Chris and I stopped dancing. I just knew that that would be the last time he and I danced together or dressed up nicely for such an event. I remember seeing Betsy Wachendorf walking past with the same expression on her face, and almost like a movie, reaching out to each other and grasping hands briefly before she disappeared into the crowd.

Silly thoughts run through my head when I'm trying to avoid thinking about the war.

I'm sitting here at work, watching the news coverage, knowing that I am watching history in the making, whether good or bad. My children (or children in the generation following mine should I have no children) will study this, but I will remember it. I'll have my blog, my journal, my e-mails and my memories to remind me of the events of March 2003.

I was 10 years old in the Persian Gulf war. I don't remember much -- green lights on television that corresponded to bombs and yellow ribbons for Emily Ripple's dad who was stationed over there.

Anyway, this rambling post has really no point, just a little "venting" from a girl who doesn't really know what else to do.

    No, I'm no one's wife
But, oh, I love my life
    And All That Jazz!
    "All That Jazz" from Chicago

Yup, I broke down and saw Chicago last night, but don't worry, I didn't pay and therefore contribute to its box office. It's a fine film, with high production value and all the trappings of Hollywood musical faire. Having so recently seen Cabaret, I was disappointed in how similar this was to it, but I realize that the musical is to blame for that and not the film. All in all, I enjoyed the film, so I won't be screaming mad if and when it sweeps the Oscars next weekend. Sometimes, I can't understand the Hollywood obsession with a particular film, but this time, though I do not share it, I can understand it.

I experienced the movie at the ArcLight. I had always been curious about the ArcLight, but never in the mood to pay for it. Tickets are $14.00. All total, if KB and I had paid for everything, we would have spent $42.50 on the tickets and refreshments. I think you see what I'm talking about. It's a fine theatre with ample parking and comfy assigned seats. The ushers announce the film at the start, which was great fun. I had a good time, but I don't think I will ever pay that kind of money to go there again.

So, I was going to come home and post about my lousy day, but then I just experienced something on the freeway that I just had to share! I was driving home from Long Beach and I saw two motorcycle CHP officers go speeding past (doing easily over 100 cause I was doing about 80 and they passed me like I was standing still), but without their sirens on. Then I came up over a hill and traffic started to slow and move toward the right. I moved over one lane and then I saw the CHP officer drive his bike sideways, effectively stopping all the lanes of traffic, me being in the front in my lane. Then as we all watched, he dragged a white refridgerator across five lanes of the 405 to the shoulder from where it had been dropped in the left lane. He then got back on his bike and we all went on our merry way. It was the funniest thing and I just busted up laughing as we drove away. I can't imagine that CHP officers think that their Friday nights will consist of things like that, but it totally happened!

So, I was talking with my mom last night as I drove home from work and she was telling me all about the staff meeting she had at work (she's a preschool teacher). They were deciding on contingency plans for terror attack scenarios. For example, when the terror alert goes orange or red, the parents of her students have to send the overnight bag with changes of clothes and food in case of a lockdown and the teachers have to keep overnight bags and non perishable food items in their closets in their room. Or the different scenarios for lockdown or evacuation, including total area evacuation. I scoffed at the paranoia, but I started to realize that DC is a target everyday and this is the reality that they live in now.

That made me realize how disconnected I am from my "homeland." I lived in LA through September 11th, the DC sniper and now this heightened sense of terror and paranoia from this pending war. I don't know what it's like to live like that anymore. I am now an outsider when I was once an insider. For as long as I've lived out here, I've prided myself on being an East Coast girl, for all that it means, not taking part in the shallow, vapid existence that is the stereotypical LA native. But now, I realize that I'm becoming one of them. I spent 20 years living in DC, but now I can't relate. I don't know what it's like. All my life I wanted to be a California girl, and now that it's apparent that I'm becoming one, I'm missing my East Coast edge.

Well, yesterday, there were two cool things that happened on my night out ;) After spending two hours in the car to get to KB's work (which MapQuest says is only 24 miles away from my work), we ventured down to 2nd Street in the Naples part of Long Beach. It's a really cool strip of stores and restaurants. KB and I went to a bike store to look at a bike he's thinking about buying. Then we went looking for dinner.

We came upon an anti-war protest, which while living in LA isn't that uncommon, on 2nd street it definitely is. I got their handouts and we went to dinner.

While our waiter tried to take our drink order, a couple in their late-20s got engaged in the middle of the restaurant, much to the delight of the people sitting at the table near their moment. Great food and good, engaging (sorry, couldn't help the pun) conversation was had with me and KB.

As we walked back to the car, we came across another set of protesters, this time in favor of the war. They had positioned themselves across the street from the anti-war protesters and everytime someone honked in support, they both went nuts. It was an interesting night in LB, I'll tell you that much ;)
