Shout out to Kristin, Adam and Matt, partying in my absence ;)

home is where *what* is exactly?
It's weird coming back to the homeland. You never know what you are going to face there, or more than likely, not face there.

Christmas Eve service was a let down. We weren't a group anymore. Just fragmented pieces of a larger whole. And some pieces were missing, like Brian and Chris and Tommy and Dave and Erin. Some people never change (which is alternately good and bad) and some people have changed so radically that you don't know how to have a conversation with them anymore. Or perhaps I have changed so radically that people simply don't know how to speak to me once the requisite questions (How's California? How's school? What are you doing now? What about that guy?) have been asked. Whatever the reason, it makes me sad. A quick hug and small talk do not a friendship maintain.

Perhaps my recent room cleaning and photo retrieval has brought back too many memories that we can no longer live up to as too many years have passed. We shall never be the smiling faces I have been staring at over the past few days, taking pictures of the ceiling, filling a tub with water balloons and a jacuzzi with pert plus (hello beach retreat!). I always felt that we could be the kids going year after year to Bagel Bakery and IHOP, taking group snapshots and watching ourselves age through pictures, talking about boys and girls, significant others, spouses and kids. Apparently, at least for me, it seems not to be the case. I miss those days of racing cars to the mall and getting lost in DC (Bickley!).

I'm going to Richmond tomorrow to see my fake cousins and my aunt. I hope perhaps to see some of my long lost friends at the alumni service, though even that has changed beyond recognition it seems. I guess it's good I only come home two weeks a year. I love my homeland, but it is not what it once was.

Rachel, I hope your grandfather is recovering well and we can get together next week. Erin and Chris, I hope we will see each other before I go home. Chris, I hope you are taking care of yourself and I miss you terribly. Anna, I'm looking forward to seeing you on Monday. HT, why haven't you returned my call? Evan and KB, I miss you both and I love you for calling me tonight -- I hope the whores were to your liking ;) Matt, call me -- we need to hang out! Everyone else, I hope you enjoy the weekend!

Who would have thought that cleaning my room would bring back so many memories?

My parents want me to de-teenagerize my room, so they can make it more like a guest room. I spent some of tonight taking things off the walls and reminicising. Oh, the memories! Like a strip of masking tape that says, "Wish me a happy day" from my senior happy day at school. Or the piece of the box of Premium raisen bran that Jon gave me for my 16 birthday, cause "somebody thinks you're special." Or the collage of photos that Chris made me the day before I left for Texas so I wouldn't forget him. Or the sticker that says "Put a check for Beck" from Surrender. I've taken down my bandaid collection and my Dawson's Creek ads. The wall of publicity photos for various shows and movies is gone. The "Have a Day" poster is rolled up and my 1st place science ribbon is off the wall. I've taken down my closet wall of X-Files photos and my shrine to Matthew Perry is no longer on the back of my door. I've taken about 6 years of my life off the walls and tossed most of it, leaving some things for posterity, only, I'm sure, to be thrown away when I go through things in 5-10 years.

So, how was your day?

Seems like everybody's doing it, so in honor of my return to the homeland, here are my "OMIGOD, that is SO true!" from the You know you're from the DC Metro area if....:

1. You say you're from DC, but you actually live in VA or MD but are too embarrassed to say it
4. You can tell when the roads change from DC to Maryland (they get better)
5. MD drivers say VA drivers are bad while VA drivers say MD drivers are bad
7. You know where the pentagon really is
12. We don't have southern accents, IT'S NOT THE SOUTH!!!!!
16. You consider Northern VA to be in no way similar to southern VA
29. You actually know what HFStival is
30. We know what direction to go on the beltway
31. Washington National is and will always be "WASHINGTON NATIONAL" not "Reagan National”
42. You can tell by people’s cars where they live and maybe even what neighborhood
43. You claim that there’s nothing to do on a weekend night even when you have a HUGE city to explore
47. You have the metro map memorized.
48. You've given people directions to I-95 and 66... simultaneously
49. Everything is at least 10 minutes away and you still think it's too far away
55. You notice that there's been construction on the same stretch of highway for the past 5 years and you never see anyone working on it
57. Once you are able to drive, you drive EVERYWHERE and never even think about the possibility of walking anywhere
**You say "NOVA" to refer to the community college and not to Nothern Virginia itself.
**You meet someone else who says they're from the DC area and you realize they're an hour away from you.
**it is rush hour 24/7.
**You never actually call "the Metro" a subway.
**You know that Woodrow Wilson Bridge is backed up for at least 2 miles in each direction, any time of day
**You describe traffic moving 1 mile in 5 minutes as "not that bad"
**You know what parts of DC you shouldn't venture into
**You're aware that National Airport is in ARLINGTON, not D.C.
**You have memorized where every red-light camera in the area is.
**You always got pissed when Fauquier County got out for snow, and you didn't.
**You know at least 3 different ways to get to the beltway
**You know exactly what a Crown Vic looks like in daylight or night, and can spot it's headlights in your rearview mirror. And you know every undercover cars make and model. You also know exactly where and when the cops will be on any road.
**When you meet someone else from the DC area, the first thing you ask them is where they went to school
**Your behind the wheel test for driver's ed was on 95 and 495
**You know that the school in "Remember the Titans" IS a real school
**People from outside the area are thrown off by your sarcasm
**When you know what "If you don't get it, you don't get it" really means.
**I-395 is Norther Virginia's version of NASCAR, but no, we don't watch that, we just do it.
**If your high school doesn't have enough parking spots for the senior class.
**You have no comment for those who brag that they've been to DC.
**You know what HS David Grohl went to
**When you realize you utter the phrase "damn tourists" entirely too often.
**You can go to school every day and see atleast 5 people you've never seen before.
**You can harmonize perfectly with the alert for "Doors Closing" on the Metro

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe I hate to go
"Leaving on a Jet Plane" by Chantal Kreviazuk

You know, even though that song reminds me of such bad things like fighting with Mrs. Adcock and that Webb boy and my Fort Worth odyssey, I still love it. How can that be?

Ironic song title of the moment: It Never Rains In Southern California

Vegas was fantastic! I couldn't have asked for a better time, unless it would have been warmer so I could have gone clubbing in my slutty clothes :(

Arrived around midnight Friday night. After waiting in line to check in, went up to room and crashed.

Got up early on Saturday and headed down to gamble. After losing money, went to the Palms to explore. Aside from a fantastic buffet (more later), nothing special. Head to the Orleans. Not as smoke free as claimed, but had bowling alley. Bowled two games. New high score: 79!! Whoohoo! Also had first strike of life!! Did more exploring around Monte Carlo (won $10 at Lance Burton slot) then back to the Palms for their $9.95 All-You-Care-To-Eat crab leg-shrimp-prime rib buffet. Vowed to never eat again. Took nap then went to the Bellagio for fun exploring. Made fun of bride's getting pictures taken. Cursed digital camera for running out of batteries. Won $25 at slots. Left Bellagio and headed for bed.

Got up not so early on Sunday. Checked out of hotel. Headed to Palms for $9.95 champagne brunch. Vowed again to never eat again. Drove the Venetian to do some shopping. Bought shirt at Banana Republic. Headed to the Hard Rock Hotel for football. Got brow wax and free facial and never felt or looked better! Watched Chiefs lose then piled into car to drive back to LA :)

Now, I'm off to a job interview this morning!

Well, I found the Christmas cards and found that my tower has a USB port and have uploaded photos from my digital camera here, here, here and here.

I've now sent out over 20 resumes looking for work and I have received one call back which didn't result in an interview because they wanted someone to start immediately. This is so frustrating!

I have the Christmas letter printed and the address labels printed. Now if I could just find the damn cards, I'd be in business!!

Hockey game was great last night! The first two periods were BOR-ING due to the lack of human bowling and you now, game play :) Did see a cool fight between the mascots ;) We were going to leave after the Chuck-A-Puck where we didn't hit the fat MC (oh well!), but wanted to say good bye to the lovely Kevin for the tickets and then ended up with better seats, right by the ice. So we were "ring side" for the fabulous fight that broke out after the Ice Dogs first goal. Ranked right up there with the fight between the mascots during the first period. Great game!

And then, of course, there is the old stand by song that will always remind me of a certain situation in high school and STAR 98.7 has randomly decided to play it, so I will now not so randomly share it with you. And if you're out there (and you know who you are), this one's for you!

You and me
We used to be together
Every day together always
I really feel
That I'm losing my best friend
I can't believe
This could be the end
It looks as though you're letting go
And if it's real,
Well I don't want to know
Don't speak
I know just what you're saying
So please stop explaining
Don't tell me 'cause it hurts

Isn't weird how something really small and insignificant can make you remember something you hadn't thought about in years?

So, I'm going through my all my MP3 files and I come across "As I Lay Me Down" by Sophie B. Hawkins. I love the early 90s! Anyways, I start thinking about my 7th grade birthday party. I only had a couple of gal pals and the rest of the guests were boys. We went ice skating and then came back to the house for birthday party goodness. Robbie Burns gave me the "Whaler" CD and that song always makes me think of him. If I hadn't been such a dork, he probably would have been my first boyfriend.

Ah, memories....and so I leave you with some classic lyrics ;)

I wonder why
I feel so high though I am not above the sorrow
Heavy hearted 'till you call my name
And it sounds like church bells or the whistle of a train
On a summer evening I'll run to meet you barefoot
Barely breathing

As I lay me down to sleep
This I pray
That you will hold me dear
Though I'm far away
I'll whisper your name
Into the sky
And I will wake up happy

Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road.
Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to do.
So make the best of this test, and don't ask why.
It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time.

It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right.
I hope you had the time of your life.

Wow, it's been a long and strange trip since I've blogged last.

Shout to Caryn, the only person who came to church on Sunday to see me! I hope to see the rest of you at Christmas! ::looks pointedly in your direction:: That means you!

The rest will have to wait...
